358 JDJ Case Forming
« on: May 04, 2011, 04:13:12 AM »
My 358 JDJ barrel and dies should arrive today.  Any suggestions on forming the cases?  Most of what i read indicated it was really easy.  Did anyone anneal the end of the cases first or just lube and size?

Any suggestions and saving me some frustrations are greatly appeciated!

As you noted a very easy to do wildcat.   No need to anneal the brass.   Just very, very, very lightly lube the brass and form with your full length sizing die adjusted so the frame will just snap closed easily with a case chambered.   I preferred Imperial Sizing Die Wax for all the wildcats I did.   Make sure you get all of it cleaned off the brass afterwards and before loading.   For the 444 based JDJ's I also ran even new brass through a 444 die first for good measure.    I probably made thousands of 309, 338#2, 358, 375 and a few 416JDJ's over the years with no lost cases.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

The biggest thing is to run the new 444 brass into a 444 or 44 mag expender die slightly to make sure the case mouth is perfectly round with no dents . I lost a few 309 jdj case  from  small dents in the case mouth when I first started loading for it .

Yeah, exactly what those guys said...this is an easy wildcat!  You should be delighted with it.  Nasty piece of work on good-eatin critters!
