Today was the big day for the  9.01 x 65R (35 Whelen Rimmed ) . Rim cut was expertly done by our own Larry Trotter.
Parent case is 7 x 65 R  necked up to 35 cal.
I don't have much load data yet for light loads,but started out with unique and a 180 gr cast which gave ok but not great results.switched to the RCBS 35-200 RF also with unique and groups inproved somewhat.
Shot a box  of Rem 200 gr factory loads for a 2  1/2"  100 yd group,but 2 fliers and one FTF !!! I hope that was a bad primer.Had a good solid firing pin strike in the primer.

Try 18 to 20 gr. of IMR 4227 with the cast bullets.

In my 30-40 Krag, 30-06 and 38-55 with cast bullets (IIRC) somewhere north of 1450fps, and pretty accurate in my offhand friendly matches (I hold my own with the boys). There are other powders in that same burning rate that you may have on hand, check the online chart and compare to your reloading manual(s). My primary reference for years has been the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, though not all calibers list all the powders suitable. Once in that burn rate for the velo you are looking for you can often find several powders that will work fine. Look at calibers similar to yours for bullet dia./weight and case capacity to get some ideas. I have made good cast loads typically from 1250 to 1450ish fps, though with gas checks and hard alloys (and the critical proper bullet dia.) you can up the velocity.

The Lyman 47th and 48th manuals have some good cast bullet loads for the Whelen, Paco has some of them in the article below, I have the 48th which lists 195gr PB w/Unique, 2400,4759, IMR4198 and 3031. And 204gr GC with 4759, IMR4227, 5744, IMR4198, RL7 and 3031, let me know which you want if you'd like the data.

Unable to find any data for 35 Whelen and light loads with cast bullets,I used 358 winchester starting data.I have nothing listing 2400 ( Near my favorite powder).The Lyman cast bullet handbook in my loadroom must be ancient no Whelen loads.
A look in my powder storage magazine shows 14 powders ranging in quickness from red dot thru H380.I woulld think I have a good coverage of the fast to medium burning powders, but almost every time someone  writes about their newest best load it's for a powder I don't have.

I've got the 3rd edition Lyman Cast bullets, no Whelen in it. But the 48th Has 2400 listed for the Lyman 195gr #358430 as I mentioned earier, 22.5gr start @ 1815fps, 29gr max @ 2255fps and 43.6kcup, COL 2.805". The RL7 data is 36gr start @ 1767fps and 40.5gr max at 2131fps and 30kcup, bullet is 204gr Lyman #358315, COL 3.045", 24" barrel, 1:16" twist, Rem brass and 9½ primers.

Thanks again for the recomendation of the 7x65R case.After necking up using a 30 cal sizer and then a 35 cal  one,the cases didn't even need trimming. Just a touch to true the case mouths.
Larry used the Whelen extractor that came with the barrel and just modified it's radius slightly.
I like this setup.The handi stable includes barrels in 7mm/08R, 307 win, and the 35wR.
Thinking of adding a 30/06R, but it's hard to justify since the 307/308R is available and nearly identical  performance.

Ive never tried this, but heard that a .308 fits into that rimmed Russian chamber in the Mosin Nagant. If true, that rechamber of a .308 might make a decent conversion.

  I just found the 7x65r cartridge diagram on Steve's Pages and was researching the idea of a rimmed Whelen when I found this topic. Can you shed some more light on this project? Did you need to fireform the brass for final sizing? Any chamber work necessary besides the rim counterbore? Do you use normal 35 Whelen dies after the initial sizing?

This is a rather simple conversion.It still can be used with  standard 35 Whelen ammo as well as the formed rimmed case  much as your 356/358 winny.
It  been a good while ago that this project was completed so my memory may have  some gaps but  if I remember correctly I just opened the case mouth  with 30 & 35 cal sizers and  ran them ( with LOTS of lube) thru a whelen sizer die then squared up the case mouth. No real trimming was necessary. I think if I were doing it again I might use the Improved Whelen as it might have less chance of a missfire although I  haven't had any.  Fired cases have a VERY slight bulge above the web due to the .005 smaller case diameter. Nothing I am concerned about though.
The whelen camber is unaltered except for the rim cut.
I laid this project aside without ever really dialing the accuracy completely in. Just had to have a 30/06 version
