45/70 roundball loads

I have a sizer that came with a chamber adapter to take .490 RB from a muzzleloader and it sizes them to .457.  I was wanting to load some with trailboss but I'm not sure where to start.  I called IMR and they told me they have never tried RB so they had no info.  The RB weighs 175 grains.  I was thinking of starting at like 10 grains the moving up from there.  Any info is appreciated.  Thanks again.

By the way this is for a handi in 45/70 with the 22" barrel if that helps any.

Not sure how well that is going to work , if I understand right , basicly you will have a double ended round nose bullet , almost like a double ended full wadcutter . Sure it will shoot , but just how well is yet to be seen . 

As for a load , I see no reason why 10g of Trailboss should not work just fine given that the bullet is 175g range and the starting load for a 300g is 14g .

I just have a gut feeling that it is going to key-hole all over the place .

Probably will keyhole my 405 with the max load of trailboss keyhole like crazy from 25yds out to 100 yds.  I tell you a slug that big tumbling thru the air even sounds different than other rounds even with ear muffs on.  On the plus side i shot the rest of this load up yesterday at an indoor range.  It would make a wonderful HD load across the room.  The 1.25 plus hole in the target looks impressive.  I might just give up on trailboss in the 45/70 and stick with 5744.  Use the rest of the trailboss up in the 44 special handgun it loves the stuff.

Also the reason i do not use the chamber adapter is the firing pin doesnt set off the powerset blank. ( the blanks used in construction to set nails into concrete.)   Not sure why it doesnt work.

Another option that's mentioned in the CB thread is the 150gr collar button, the data may be useful with the RBs.

Thanks for the info I saved the pages you linked in my favorites.  Gonna try 5 of the RB with 10 grains of trailboss tommorrow.

I have thought about doing the same thing with my guide gun but never got around to it. As far as loads go 12gr. of trailboss behind a 350gr in my 500 smith with the 8 3/8 barrel gets 750fps. 14gr gets 830fps if that helps getting a refference.

I don't if I'd start with 10 gr, you might end up with a squib. I use 14 in my .45-70 loads with 300 or 350 gr bullets. That gives me around 1,000 FPS, according to the T.B website.
Another point of your post gives me pause. You stated your sizer will reduce the ball to .457", aren't .45-70 bullets .459 typically?  .002" undersize will give you horrendous accuracy.

probably will not shoot for beans but i cant resist trying it.  By the way only looking to shoot 25 yds with this combo.  My normal load is 405 cast at 1300fps.
