Ammo and Pressure Swedish m96
« on: May 05, 2011, 07:46:20 AM »
What factory ammo can I safely feed to my swed m96 1913 in good shape?
I already fed her with 15 rounds of PPU 139gr SP BT shot very well, 4.5in 5shot group out to 200yrds open sites w/old eyes. BUT WILL THIS STUFF BLOW UP MY GIRL ARE WHAT? Also I will be reloading for her and my ? is assuming I should never load to max loads. How fare can I safely load up to on the charts? Can I load up to 45,000 cup, is this true? I would like some good sound advise for this! Thanks for any input.

You are unlikely to find factory ammo that'll hurt your girl. Most load data is within the limits of your girl but there is some hotter data out there.Read you book carefully .I've never seen one with the hotter load data that was not mentioned in the book the loads are listed in.6.5x55 is a sweet cartridge hope you have many years to enjoy her.

Quote from Jerry Kuhnhausen "The Swedish Small Ring Mausers are the best made and heat treated of all the small ring Mauser Actions"

All factory ammo should  not be more than 45,000 PSI.

If you handload, as long as you work your loads up slowly and don't exceed the maximum loads in the various name brand reloading manuals pressures should be at a safe level not more than 45,000 PSI.

Just don't use reloading data from an unknown source or from someone who is loading for a more modern action type.

chrsm:  Sellier and Bellot, PRVI, Norma, Winchester, Remington and Federal all make 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser loads and you get to have all the fun finding out which one shoots best in your M96.  I am not aware of any factory loadings (US or European) for any European calibers that comes anywhere near max pressures.  I prefer Sellier and Bellot ammo for my 6.5 Swedes, either 131 gn sp or 140 gn ball.  My preferred load manuals for that caliber show pressures to the 46,000 psi range.  HTH.

Thanks for all the input, sounds good. I picked up some surplus ammo after posting. One box of (6,5mm sk ptr m/94 prj m/41 prickskytte) there was only one box of 20. Is anyone familiar with this and might shed some light, its magnetic and  really clean. I herd you should stay away from the DUTCH stuff is this true? I also picked up some H4831 was thinking of matching it up with 160gr Hornady RN? thanks again

If you all are talking current psi measured with piezo-transducer equipment and not CUP (the old Copper Crusher Pressure) then SAAMI MAP (Maximum Average Pressure) for the 6.5 Swede is 51,000 and CIP (the European proof house) is 55,000 psi.  I measure the psi in 2 different Swede rifles and have yet to find a factory load any where close to either of those figures.

Thanks Larry and every one else,  that makes me feel allot better. I just get a little weary about sticking ammo that was made last month in a long arm that's 100yrs old. But  BOY CAN SHE SHOT! Next stop 250yrd!

load data for the 6.5x55 with pressure information.   Highest pressure listed 45,900 CUP for the 160 grain bullet.
