45-70 SS ultra Hunter
« on: May 05, 2011, 10:12:56 AM »
So I sold a couple handis to get this, but I wanted it so what can I say. I called my mom and pop shop up the road from me last Tuesday. He said he would order it and it should be in Friday. I picked it up this Tuesday. Fit and finish are great. I topped it of with a Nikon prostaff 2X7X32 shotgun scope. Well we finally had some sun today so I decided even with the gusting wind I would shoot it. Trigger is nice and crisp not overly heavy. can't tell what the actual pull is,but it's good. I bore sighted it and put a piece of card board out at 50 yards. With wind blowing my piece of cardboard around a fair bit I was able to shoot a 2"  3 shot group with remington green box 405 grainers. For a starting point I'm happy.
I do alot of still hunting so I may trade the thumb hole for the cin. lam. set I have on my SS 223, we will see. By the way it was $423 out the door.

I've got the cin.lams. on mine now and like it very much, sure you will too  ;D :D ;D
I'm not sure how many of us there are with these, a minority I expect.
BTW, hope it doesn't happen, but if you get FTFs be sure to PM me.

spike,

Congrats on the new gun!  I had a laminate thumbhole on a 45-70 and it was fine with trapdoor loads.  When I started shooting heavier loads it would pound the palm of my hand.  Also, I agree with you that a thumbhole stock doesn't seem to lend itself to quick, offhand shooting.  Anyway, traded the TH stock for pistol grip Lam Stock and never looked back.  Let us know how she shoots.

Tom this is number 3 for me. I think they are as addicting as handis themselves.

So I switched out the stocks for a set of cin. lams. and I think this is going to be much better for still hunting.

Next we are having an absolute beautiful day today not sure how long it's been since weve seen the sunshine. So I shot for group today using Rem 405gr SP and Hornady 325gr FTX LE rounds. Shots 1,2,3, are the Rem 405gr at 100 yards they shot 1 3/4".  It didn't like the Hornady LE rounds at all they shot a 6" group. So for now I'm going to stick with th Remington's until I start tinkering with reloads.
