Oh No, I own a Glock?!
« on: May 07, 2011, 09:32:25 AM »
Hehe,
A coworker of my wife is moving to Canada. he tells her that handgun ownership there isnt allowed and he is selling his pistol. Anyhow, she comes home last night an says he has a Glock 23 in OD Green, 2- 12 rnd mags with +2 extensions, 1-10 rnd mag with the +2 extension, 2 holsters a blackhawk and a Fobus, a magazine holster made by fobus, the original case with all the paperwork, cleaning kit and the 2 spent rounds.  I asked what he wanted for it, she said she didnt know but turned down 250.00$. I call him an talk for a while, ride out to his house and take a look. i ask whats his bottom dollar, 300 he says. SOLD!
So is this a good deal or did I get taken?   ;D

The pistol was made in 2005, what generation of glock is this considered to be?
If I get the conversion barrel for 9mm, what mags from what model Glocks will work with it?
   Thanks, Dave

CONGRATULATIONS DAVE!!

You got a fair deal!  What generation is it? First gens where only black and not going for as much as the more recent versions.  But a gen two or Three around here is under 4 used, but only with two mags.. you got lots of extras!!

For mags a 19 mag will fit just like the stock 23 mags. But a 17 mag will also work, it will just protrude below the grip.

Dave, your Glock is a Gen 3. And yes, it's easily converted to 9mm with a barrel and mag change. As CW mentioned, mdl 17/19/34 mags will work just fine in 9mm. Great deal on a great gun!

Whoops!  Somebody made a  mistake.  Glocks are allowed in Canada where they cost a heck of a lot more than in the states.  Yes, I also think it's a Gen3.  I'll give you a picture; so you can see for yourself.  From left-to-right:  1st, 2nd, & 3rd.  http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/9325/1st2nd3rdgenerationgloc.jpg

Yes,  you'll need a 9mm conversion barrel and 9mm (G-19) magazines.  The most reliable conversions include:  a 9mm SLB, extractor, and (I believe) a 9mm ejector, too.  Don't expect absolute 100% reliability with the 9mm conversion barrel in the gun.  That's not going to happen.  Why?  Because the conversion barrel will NOT present the case rim to the (respective) extractor in exactly the same place.  You might get 98 or 99% reliability; but, you're not going to get 100.

Ask an aftermarket supplier like Lone Wolf Distributors whether or not you should change the ejector, too?  One of the older support reps, like JR or Dan, will know.

GD,

From what I have read and in speaking with a guy from the glock store and emails to lone wolf. The conversion barrels are all that required and offer complete reliability they did not say 100%. They said complete reliability.

I ordered one last week and can report later on after I shoot it some.

The chamber is supposedly slightly off center to allow for more extractor bite on the smaller 9mm rim. Unsure how this will equate to longer shots and site alignment. Maybe they figure a handgun is close range proposition and do not worth about it... I do not yet know. I hope not as my handguns shoot where I aim them and this included longer ranges.

Thanks for the info guys, its why I come to this site!!   I shot a few rounds through it last weekend but didnt spend too much time with it. I will say it shoots where I point it, but wasnt at a range or on any kind of rest. Recoil isnt as bad as I thought it would be for sure, sorta inbetween a 45 and a 9? Im not really a pistol guy so thats my best guess.
I may try the lone wolf barrel just for cheaper ammo to practice with, not sure yet. All in all, I am quite pleased with this gun, It hits where I want and the feel and pull of the trigger isnt bad at all. do yall think I should call the fella an tell him they are allowed in Canada?.

The Glock 23 is as far as I'm concerned the best of the Glocks, and one of the all time best duty weapons in L.E. . Best feel, best point ability, best carrying, and best in caliber. I prefer it over the 45acp, although a big fan of the 45acp. I definitely prefer it over any of the nines including the 357sig, aka 40cal brass necked to 9mm.
I have really resisted to buy a Glock 23, and I suppose it's due to laziness on my part as they have to be dealt with differently than most on concealed carry, which I mean, a holster is just about mandatory for safety of the carrier.

Well,
I gotta say I really love mine...

I have always been a commander guy, carrying my LWT Commander for many many years. Its heavier and feels bulkier than the Glock. Point-ability is something I have to work on as I'm more used to the 1911.

So far I have been carrying it in a Fobus Paddle and find it very comfortable and easily concealable. Even with 14 rounds I find it lighter than the Commander holding 8.
Personally, I am looking for a good leather holster. I sit/drive /ride allot and would love to find a good cross-draw holster. Like the Bianchi Cyclone.

i like my 23 as well.  it carries very well.   i wear it constantly and it doesnt bother me at all.   i use a heavy nylon gun belt i picked up through dillon, and a blackhawk serpa belt holster (both made in the usa).   i wear the gun under minimal clothing, and no one has noticed it to date.  most people are shocked if and when they become aware of it's presence.   i love, love, love my 23.

I have 2 holsters that came with my 23 ,a Blackhawk CQC (i think) and a Fobus Paddle. Of the 2 I think I will like the Blackhawk the most (I havent worn either yet) because of the release. It looks to be more secure to me.
For those that carry concealed, Does the lack of an external safety bother you any at all?
Is there any real danger of accidental discharge while holstering or unholstering?  Im somewhat new to pistols, I have experience with em, just never had any real need for one until now. Im considering getting my CCL, and this will be my carry gun if I do.  Thanks, Dave

Dave,

What I tell people is the best safety you can have is sitting on your shoulders. Some people are bungup on a mechanical safety. That's a personal choice. But I will tell you a safety is a mechanical device. Mechanical devices can and do regularly fail.

I'll put my faith in me thank you very much.

Dave I am very familiar with the Glock both professionally (now retired) and for personal carry. You had best adhere to carrying your 23 in some type of holster. The trigger WILL SNAG ON CLOTHING, and other articles and go off.

 Thanks again,
Being a rather skinny fella (6ft and 158lbs) How would you suggest i carry concealed? Im in extreme southern Louisiana. Its already working to the 90s, and humidity very rarely gets below 50-60%. Long sleeves, vests, fanny packs are out of the question. How well does an untucked t-shirt conceal a pistol?

I carry with an inside the waistband year around. You can wear a t-shirt on the outside and with a soft suede holster with a belt clip you can also carry it just in front of you hip-bone as a belly gun. This has been a popular way to carry conceal for a couple hundred years, and is a fast access method to boot.

As an old wheelgun man followed by a 1911 phase, I am shocked than the plastic guns are now starting to take over my carry and range time.

A used Ruger P-95 started my plastic phase. My reliable 23 has mated up with a LWD 40 barrel to move to the top of my heap of general purpose using guns.

First off, Congrats on a good deal!
As far as the concern for no external safety, there is one... it sits between your ears.. and is the most important one  ;D. It is the only one I need. Since you are not only new to this gun, but handguns in general I would suggest you spend a fair bit of time becoming familiar with the gun before carrying it. Dont put your finger in the trigger guard on the draw and it wont go "bang". I know that sounds stupid, but its that simple... repetition is the important factor here... pick the holster you feel the most comfortable with... drop the magazine and then clear the chamber... check it twice to be sure. Once you are 100% sure that the chamber is empty work on drawing the firearm and going to point of aim. Initially, do this slowly... make sure that you are not putting your finger in the trigger guard on the draw until you have cleared your body and at point. I carry in the small of my back - g27 and if drawn quickly can slightly muzzle flash my body.. so i have practiced over and over drawing and keeping my finger out until I am on point. Now I can draw full speed without worrying about it, its just muscle memory. I dont conceal very well with a paddle holster as I am a thinner guy - I still get some printing. I am always looking for a better concealed carry position, just havent found one I like better yet. Just practice practice practice.... Once you are COMPLETELY confident drawing from the holster and going to point, do the same drill while shooting, but start slow again.. and get faster. Safety first always, you cant take an "accident" or "negligent discharge" back.

Other than that, you have a great gun there. I'm sure you'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it!
