6.5 ????
« on: May 07, 2011, 03:20:54 PM »
something I haven't seen is a handi in a 6.5 of any sort. Is there any specific reason why or maybe just demand. Would definitely like to see one in 6.5x55 or maybe 260 rem. Casin would not be to large with a generally mild recoil for the light weights :D

Other than the factory 25-05 if you want a 25 'whatever' or a 6.5 its a custom rebore or stub job. Several of us have 25-35s and IIRC Quick has a 6.5x45 (?) that I would like to hear more about. I think a 6.5x55 would be dandy too but 6.5s have never really caught on in the USA, though popular in much of the rest of the world. We are such .30cal. fans and that is probably where the sales volume and money is.

I have a 6.5x55 (stubbed Shilen) and a 260 Remington(rebored 243 Superlight), both done by Wayne, also have a 6x45, there is no 6.5(.264" barreled H&R, as Blake said, the only way to get there is a stub or rebore, without one of those, the closest they get is .257"(25-06) or ..277"(270 Win).

The 6.5 has the advantage of longer, heavier bullets than our .25 calibers, but from what I have heard from our members with the 25-06 it does the job for some pretty far out there hunting. I have experience with the Italian Carcano carbine, it likes the 129 to 140 gr. Hornady's (IIRC) but with its Lyman open sights (Its a 'sporter) the range is limited to about the same as our venerable 30-30 ;94 Win. A few years ago I believe a 1K yd match was won with a 6.5x55 that basically shot  a 1/4"moa group. Thats some shootin'!
I think I could come up with 25-06 reduced velo loads that would suit my tastes (mostly cast bullets, but Ive been delving into this 'jacketed' bullet thing more of late). Its just so much cheaper to get a factory chambering and build a load to do what you want, though if you make a 6.5x55 I will sure follow the project with interest.

6.5x55 is a favorite of mine also. Great cartridge. I wish you could get a Handi in 6.5x55mm as I would buy one, maybe two.
This is a Handi forum but my favorite rifle is a T/C Encore Custom shop barrel in 6.5x55. Will shoot small groups and
is very light. The ole Swede is a great round.

I will soon be putting together a Handi in 6.5 X 65R, Will be on a 24" fluted barrel ( re-bored .204 ), with Classic Carbine wood. I'm a big fan of the 'Swede", but wanted a rimmed round.

There's always the 6.5x307... ;) One could use the .260 Rem dies and data to load it too.

Thanks, Dinny

I have been considering doing one in 6.5 x 53.5r (Dutch Service round) it is a rimmed version of the 6.5x54. I have a dutch carbine in this caliber and it is very accurate,  have been a fan of te round for years, thinking a 22 inch handy with a good scope would be a great combination.

Personally, I would be leery of using the .260 Rem with it SAAMI recommended pressure of 60K in a Handi. Again, that is my personal choice and others may choose to do so in a break action rifle. Personally, I'd prefer the 6.5 Grendel or derivatives (there are several based on the 6.5x39 design) for a 6.5mm chambering. The 6.5x39 in a Handi would be one of the best balanced rifle/caliber combinations of rifle weight/recoil/accuracy/downrange performance ever.

The 260 Rem works fine in a Handi, as do the 243 Win @ 60kpsi, 7mm-08 @ 61kpsi, 280 Rem @ 60kpsi 308 Win @ 62kpsi, 30-06 @ 60kpsi and 270 Win @ 65kpsi, all of them have the same .470" case head and SAAMI MAPs of 60kpsi of more.
