Couple of scope questions about my 45-70 BC
« on: May 07, 2011, 06:01:43 PM »
I wand a scope for my H&R Buffalo classic that will handle the recoil pretty good. I was thinking about the Redfield 4x12x40.

Also, I seem to be having trouble finding scope mounts/rings for the Buffalo classic. Any pointers?

Cajun,

ironsighter base and burris signature meduim rings  from Midway.

Weaver 4x32 shotgun scope at natchez shooters, was on sale for $99, or Weaver or redfield revolution 2-7x32.

The 4-12x40 will work, these others look better on the handi rifle and perform well.  I wouldn't put that much power on a 45/70, but to each his own.

Lots of base info in the FAQs, ring height will be decided by the scope you choose, see the FAQs for info on that too.  ;)

The good old Weaver scopes look good on these rifles (to me anyway) and I like as low a mount as possible to clear the hammer (keeps my cheek on the buttstock comb). Some rails are thicker than others, which will affect how a given set of rings sets the scope.

Cajun,

I have a 45-70 BC, rechambered to 45-120, and I shoot very stout loads in the gun.  I have a 4 12 40 Redfield on this gun and after several hundred rounds the scope is fine.  The edge of the eye box on this scope is fairly thin so if you crowd the scope be prepared for a case of scope eye.   The is an operator error problem as the new Redfields have a lot of eye relief.

Thanks for the input fellers. What about a scope base/mount? My rifle didn't come with anything.

The BC has an SB2 frame, same as Handis and Ultras, so it uses the same scope base.

Lots of base info in the FAQs.....  ;)

Ended up with a Redfield 3-9 X 40 from Bass Pro Shops. Gonna try to take it out to shoot this weekend.

I currently live in Pride. But Maurepas Swamp is my stomping ground.
