Barnett Jackal
« on: May 08, 2011, 06:27:28 AM »
Ordered a Barnett Jackal, it arrived Friday.  First shot, right through the foam target we use for our compounds.  Second shot same thing.  Went to Sportsman's and got a tougher target, says it's for crossbows.

Came home set target up at 15 yards in yard.  The Bears are 15 yards away at our bait station.  First shot right over the target, saw leaves fly behind target, smaller target than the old one.  Adjusted scope.  Second shot hit the bulls-eye, right where I was aiming.  Third shot I aimed low and hit low, did not want to hit first bolt.

Went to retrieve the bolts.  First visual inspection, can't see anything.  Raked all the leaves aside, still can not find anything.  Got out the metal detector, found it under 4" of roots and dirt.  The second and third shots were still on foam block.  Unable to remove them.  They are in about 10 inches and I've used the arrow pullers we use for our compounds and still can't move them.  Looks like I am going to have to take them into the shop and use the press to take them out.

Roggy,

Rotate the shafts by giving them a twist, then pull them out. What happens is the arrows actually friction weld themselves in some/most foam targets. That is why I use a SpyderWeb target for field tips, and a Rinehart RhinoBlock for broadheads. My bow shoots 425 FPS with 160 pounds of KE, and the arrows come out of the SpyderWeb target with a finger and a thumb.

What works great as a inexpensive target is a burlap or poly feed sack stuffed tightly with old clothing. Cut out all zippers, snaps, rivets, and buttons first though.

Some people spray or wipe their arrows with teflon type sprays before shooting into foam targets, but I find it more productive to shoot better targets. Notice I didn't say more expensive, but this is one instance where you do get what you pay for. With the exception of the home-made target above.

Give 'em a twist first to break the bond (friction weld), then pull. Good luck!

Distroyed two fiberglass bolts trying to turn them in the target.  Since then I spray Pam cooking spray on bolts before shooting.  Makes it where I can turn them by hand.  Once turned they slid out.

Is this a good crossbow?  I have been looking at one.

Also, I wonder if for turkey hunting I should look at a unit that is not so fast, like in the 250-285 fps range so as to not just drill them and have them fly away like I have been reading about?

I'm glad I saw this thread. I just got my Jackel yesterday and have yet to shoot it at my big foam block target. Its my first crossbow so I wasn't sure what to expect when target shooting. I'll be sure to either get a new target or lube up the arrows before I shoot it.  :)
