Looking for a .454 92, and debating bbl. lengths?
« on: May 08, 2011, 03:22:34 PM »
Hey y'all...

I've become fairly convinced that my .454 Casull pistol can't get by without a companion rifle.  The issue I'm having is that I can't seem to find any.  I've got a few weeks left at work, (remote location, well away from my gun safe, or bank account) but I'd like to make something happen in a few weeks when I make it home again.  Any clues as to where one could be found, would sure be appreciated.

Also, for those who have them...what kind of handling, aiming differences have you noted between the 16" and 20" bbl.?  That 16"er is just so darn handily sized, it's near irresistible, but it seems the 20" bbl. would be a little easier to shoot accurately.  Your thoughts and experiences would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I have the 20" version  and it a handful when loaded with heavy(300gr plus) bullets! The heaviest I've shot out of it is 325gr and thats more then I want to do on a regular basis!  I can run 240 gr XTP mags at 2200fps which make it a very good stopper on any thing I'd want to shoot!  ;D  The 16" might be handy but at 5lbs or less it has to be a burtal shooter and the blast  ah no!

Get that pistol a companion, I have a 20'' and like 454Puma said the fact. 300 will thump ya. If I remember right I think I crony them at 1800 fps. I shoot a downloaded 250 gr. xtp at about 1700 fps and it's comfortable, still packs plenty of punch at 100 yrds. for our smaller FL. deer. Went through 15'' of packed wet news print and expanded to .617" and retained wt. of 240gr at 100 yrds.
an unloaded wepon is equal to the same mass and volume as a rock.

The bbl. length remains a real toughy for me.  Common sense is telling me to go with the 20" just for the sight plain, if nothin' else.  The 16" bbl. is just so darn short, light and handy looking.

I reckon with any of them, I'm gonna take a bit of a bruising- I'll be carrying the same rounds I often carry in my revolver, which go from 360 grain Cor-Bon hard cast on up.

On the bright side, at least I know I want stainless, with a bolt mounted peep sight.

I sure do appreciate y'all's thoughts on the rifle.

I have a 16" stainless and a 20" blued in the 454.  The shorter barrel will jump out of your hand easier than the 20".  The trapper is handier out of a UTV or truck.  I got the longer one first and just couldn't pass up the shorter one when I saw it.  They are very handy, light and quick to the shoulder with the 16 inch winning for being fast to handle and the 20" for being easier to shoot accurately.  The longer barrel is nice for shooting out to longer distances.  Do what I did, get both and be happy ;D.  DP
