You would probably have to decide what it is you want to hunt. The Dakotas can't be beat for pheasants, and ND has a lot of waterfowl. Wisconsin is ate up with tureys and deer as far as I can tell, gun friendly... time will tell.

If you are leaving Fla., you best hurry up here as we only have 4 days of summer as you would recognise it. Take one of you southerners all summer to put in enough propane to make it through winter :).

Utah has pretty good gun laws, but the hunting and fishing regs suck.  As soon as my wife gets her teaching degree we are hoping to move back to Wyoming or at the very least Idaho.  They both have lots of hunting and fishing and they dont try to rake you over the coals for every cent they can like they do here in Utah.  But thats only if you can stand long winters.  Where my wife is from in Wyoming winter is between 6 and 8 months out of the year depending on the year.  They are getting more snow as I type this.  It keeps out the riff raff though.  So if you like old farmers who dont get in much of a hurry and dont mind driving through a herd of cows on main street every now and again, I would recommend Western Wyoming.

Wyo Coyote hunter I didnt mean north west wyoming.  Jackson Hole is just that.  But Star Valley is still a small humble area of farmers.  Dont know that I have met any Utahns or Californians in that part, but to each his own.

Great idea quasne.inc. Star Valley sounds like a great place to live. I don't recommend Texas at all. Texas sucks to live in. Nothin to do here, and the weather is awful.

I not thinking about moving right now(i like my state alot and i don't like snow) i ask because i saw something in a gun magzine about "best states to live in for shooters" and i wondered what are some of the best places in the US for shooters. Here in Florida SB 234 just passed (which their  calling a Christmas present of which even Santa would be proud) that allows a Florida dealer to sell a handgun or long gun to any resident of another state who may legally own a firearm,Licensed Open Carry,Licensed College Campus Carry.

so the bill  permit current and future concealed carry licensees to carry open or concealed at their option.

permit lawful concealed carry on college campuses, in career centers, and private schools and  permits student, teacher, and administrator licensees to carry their firearms on campus.

provides that a licensed concealed carrier shall not be prohibited from carrying or storing a firearm in a vehicle for lawful purposes.

provides that Floridians will be able to purchase firearms from any state, so long as a National Instant Criminal Background Check System check is performed prior to purchase, and the laws and regulations of the state in which the transaction is made are fulfilled.

Prior to last year, one could only get a concealed weapons/firearms license by mail from the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DOACS), Division of Licensing after having fingerprints taken at one's local sheriff's office. That changed following the election of President Obama in November of 2008. As more and more people applied, the licensing office soon became inundated with pending applications. Florida law specified that should an application be in process for 90 days, an interim approval would be granted pending final disposition. In order to alleviate the backlog, DOACS field offices, by appointment, began accepting license applications and electronically scanning fingerprints. Soon, the backlog disappeared, and as of late, people have been receiving their licenses in as little as 7 business days after their appointments. The only problem was that per statute, DOACS was not authorized to take fingerprints. SB 234 fixes that oversight.

also  HB45 passed  which prohibits local governments from regulating firearms.

If i wanted to give up guns i would moved to California(i have been told if you like CCW or haveing a gun stay far away from there).

You ain't foolin anybody Dee. Everybody knows Texas is way better than Wyoming!
Wide open spaces, great gun laws, great hunting, and the friendliest people. Even the Govenor carries! The climate is much better and warmer. More job opportunities, especially for teachers. More different kinds of game with all the exotics there. Wyoming doesn't even allow exotics! Wyoming just sucks!!

And don't forget all those BBQs at Dee's house! Don't want to miss out on those!

Actually saddlebum I am from Southeast Texas.  I got tired of 100 degree weather, 100 percent humidity, flooding and evacuating from hurricanes.  I'll take 7 months of winter over 9 months of summer anyday.   Obviously west and east Texas are two very different places.  But Wyoming is way more wide open then east Texas, the gun laws in Wyoming are better and the deer are way bigger than them little tiny eastern white tail.  The people are equally friendly so thats a draw, and if you look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Kindergarten teachers in 2009 made on average $5000 more that year than in Texas.  LAWYERED!

@quasne.inc

I agree with you on what you said AND alot more. But can we keep that our little secret?
Like what Wyo. Coyote Hunter eluded to, the influx of less than desirable people is taking away from one of the things that makes Wy. great. The fact that it is the least populated state in the union. And it's a conservative state. And it's not just in the west. Sheridan used to be alot nicer place than it is now and the same with Cody and a few other small towns around the Bighorn Basin. I'd hate to see what happened in Montana, happen in Wy.
So, shhhh, lets just keep it to ourselves.

As far as my last post to Dee, I was just pulling the tiger's tail to see what happens.    ;D

saddlebum it's the same here. They move to the country from the city to get away from the city, and then start running for town council, and school boards, so they can transform the country into the city. When Carrier Corp. moved from California to Dallas, a bunch of them moved up here to commute. What a crew of squirrels!

My bad saddlebum.  I can be a little dense from time to time.  Most newcomers to Star Valley dont last after their first winter there.  And there are almost no jobs unless you like raising cattle, sheep, or snow.

Texas gun laws are not like the wild west?? I thought they had few if any laws in the long star state?  Well when i was in Omaha, Nebraska  for a year(I hated living there. the city was unclean, it's  cold, the people there seem to hate outsiders, etc)   we used to got across the river to council bluffs, Iowa which was way better then Omaha but the gun laws were just as bad.  you have to get a permit to purchase handgun from the cops(like they will give you one ;D ;D)

anyways maybe Montana( Cash and carry, shall issue, no registration, no waiting period, no limit on the number of guns purchased, private party transfers, etc), South Dakota,Alaska, and Arizona. If they have 1000 yards ranges for shooting i could get used to snow(just go to bass pro or sportsman guide to gear up) but i love the south because it's my home land and there lots of class 3 dealers and guns stores here in FL. Were else can you go, see, hold, see  for sale(class 3 dealer) and rent a Saw M249.

Texas does not allow open carry, so it really isn't much like the real West.  But I think it would be a wonderful place for anyone to move to.   ;D

You hit it right on the head Jamal. IA and NE won't let anyone buy guns, the deer are small and not very numerous, no turkeys or any other wildlife. It's an awful place, not to be recommended to anyone.  8)

Virginia is not bad for hunting, although finding a good place is getting harder unless you own your own land.  We've got the usual southern problems in warm weather - poison ivy, mosquitoes and lots of ticks, including these new deer ticks.  They alway find me and they are really hard to find until they have sunk in.

Gun laws are generally good, although I think we've still got a 30 day handgun rule.  State police commander is a good guy.  The New York investigation angle is actually a good story.  I think there was only one case.  Bloomberg, the blooming idiot mayor, sent a couple of private eyes down a few years ago to try to make straw man sales.  Clerks tipped the police right away and a trap was set.  They did see the inside of a cell.  The outrage was pretty wide spread, since any time law enforcement sets something like that up there is a chance something could go wrong and someone could get hurt.  The governor at that time was democrat Tim Kaine, a total bozo with national ambitions, but there was so much heat he wrote Bloomberg a pretty nasty letter.  I thought we should have organized a posse and gone up there to arrest the mastermind, but you take what you can get.

Hmm. Having been a resident of Massachusetts all of my life I can tell you that each state has it's own positives and negatives( when I( worked as a public school teacher I had traveled the entire summer across the United States visiting each state with the exception of Oregon and Hawaii). I know many have made comments about various states but you need to be able to make a living with the skills that you have. If your skills are of no need in an area you desire then moving there is a moot point unless you are retired or won a substancial lottery.

There is a study that can be accessed from George Mason University that rates the states on a freedom index. I would do an internet search for that study and read through it carefully and see what you can come up with.

Regarding the criteria of what you set New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Illinois, California and Wisconsin would be at the bottom.

For hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, 4-wheeling, lots of public land and easy access to private land ... along the Rocky Mountains (either slope) in UT, CO, WY, MT or ID were at a sportsmans paradise during the active years of my life.   Politics vary, but all of these states have lots of places where the local folks don't care much about politics.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
