We have done a good bit of traveling this summer and last spring..When we discuss the best states in which to live, as much as I love the west, life in Wy. and Mt. would be hard if one had to grow any food at all..in a survival situation the game would soon be gone, much already is due to the wolves..right now we are in NW Montana..seems like there are some deer, but heavy brush, and some grouse..some seem to grow gardens..as much as I hate hot weather and humidity I would think W. Va., Missouri, Ark., maybe Mississippi and Pa. would provide fish, small game, deer and an ideal enviornment for growing gardens, etc...

My Wife want to move to Oregon in a few years...

I hear it is nice, with some hunting and fishing opportunities.

Yes, I do live in Wisconsin and love it. Our children live in California and soon Oregon as well. If we must choose between California and Oregon, it will be Oregon.

yes, Oregon would be the better choice. I think you live in a great state now. I would move to WI is a heart beat. Thats my home territory. Love the northwoods but would like to live in south western Wi around the Richland Center to La Crosse area/region. Only thing stopping that now, is my wife who has gotten to love the weather out here in N. Cal.

Not exactly. I owned a place outside Mercer on the Turtle Flambeau Flowage for many years. Spent lots of time there and was involved in a business up there. Prior to that, I spent a lot of time over in the Birchwood area and the Hayward lakes area. I lived in northern IL from 1976 to 1997 and Wisconsin was our play ground. Likely spent more weekends, holidays and vacations there. My in laws owned a place in Cambridge so that was also a place we spent lots of time. I never had a WI drivers license, if that makes sense. You live in a great state. You will enjoy Oregon. To me, it seems like the Wisconsin of the west.

Yes, you have experienced some of the best of Wisconsin. I have worked and played in the Birchwood-Hayward most of my life and consider myself fortunate.

:-\ Hey, Oregon is a beautiful place with lots to offer...BUT when I spent a couple mths. there four or five years ago, I felt the heavy hand of a liberal gov't. hanging over me..cops at gunshows, just the general feeling of the state..like I said, beautiful, but I did not care for the gov.t attitude...

If you can handle the snow and cold winters, the area's around Flathead Lake would be a nice place to live.   Went there alot on business for about 10 years and came real close to buying a bunch of land there 20 odd years ago on the Swan when I knew I'd be retiring the next year.    Thought about opening a seasonal antique store in Big Fork for the wife, and me, well I would have been boating, fishing and hunting all the time just like I did on the business trips when I had time.   All are very good there if you know where (I did), and with all the edible wild plants it could be a very good place to live off the land.

Problem I had with Oregon, besides the politics, is I could handle the snow and cold better back then than the constant rain.   I considered it for a time when I went there on business often those years, thought maybe down on the Rogue River or maybe at Coos Bay as I had retired friends that lived at both.   Nope, too much rain... reminded me too much of Hawai'i and in part why I sold my place on Maui.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

At the gun shows here there may be one police officer, usually a deputy sheriff, checking guns brought in and putting orange flags on them.  Otherwise, the only ones there are there for the same reasons I am.

It's that way in Portland but not out in the smaller towns.  The hunting sucks here.  The black tail deer mostly move into town before hunting season starts and you only get one chance for one deer.  I've lived here in Oregon most of my life and I have no desire to move but I jealous of you guys that live in areas with good deer hunting.  There's supposed to be wild hogs in southern Oregon but I've never met anyone that's actually seen one.

I have to vote for MS also. Lots of deer and turkeys, Pretty long seasons for both. Weather is mild and gun laws aren't bad. Wast hard at all for me to get my concealed license. And some large industries are making their way here. I work for one of the new Toyota plants and the pay is good, but the benifits are outstanding.  Also several welding jobs in my area. Plus Nissan in Canton, and new Winchester ammunition facility also

Actually this is on my bucket list.  I'm working too much building a small business to get away right now but I'm hoping to make my way down to Texas for pig hunting in the next year or two...

And don't pay too much attention to reports about categories in which Mississippi is last.  There is a section of Mississippi, which I won't identify, that, if you took it out, this state wouldn't be last in anything!  By the way, it's 57 degrees right now at 9:00 pm.

A few years ago an outdoor magazine listed the best places to live if you liked to hunt and fish.
The number one town was Mountain Home, Arkansas.   Well I've been there and its scary with all the aliens.  Just last week they saw a Yankee with a U-haul come to town.

I like it much better when I see U-hauls and Yankees leaving town.
Mountain home is infested with Yanks. Lucky for me, they are not in my area as much, thou Mountain Home is not far away.
Yankees won't like it here, we won't have ANY restrictions concerning our guns, no mag restrictions on an AR being carried for Varmits/whatever, long hunting seasons, alot of lakes and rivers. It is the only State that has both Alligator & Elk Permits.
It snows very little, no need getting used to a different climate. Yankees love to be regulated, we just don't have enough laws.
My advise is to head Northeast so that folks like Cristy, Bloomberg & the crossdressers can tell you what to do at all times, that way you don't have to waste energy thinking.
I just stay in the Ozarks & close to the Delta so I grip about all the game.
No, Mountain Home is terrible & so is all of AR, Southern MO, OK, & Texas.

No, the gunners/hunters did not, I am being a little sarcastic here. But sadly for you & others who love freedom up there are in the minority. But other than a few Western States, AK and the ones I mentioned before are the only States I would consider. Hang tough

Those people recommending VT and mentioning favorable gun laws need to contact the senior US Senator from VT.  Leahy is proposing national gun registration through requiring universal background checks and records kept of all US gun owners and privately owned firearms.

There is only one state, Alaska.  I was born and raised in Tennessee.  When I could hunt on my Grandpa's farm it was great.  Today there are too many restrictions, and their seasons are really screwed up.  Coyote hunting is a nightmare.  Places I have lived and hunted.

California, Fair hunting but not enough places to go.  Too many people all wanting to hunt the same place.

Nevada, Good hunting, with lots of public land.

Arizona, Fair hunting, but too restrictive.

New Mexico, Great Hunting, but you need an attorney to read and explain the regulations.  Too many restrictions on seasons.

Texas, it's all private land, and they want to charge an arm and a leg to hunt on their property.

Alaska, Great hunting, but the federal government is trying to lock up as much land as possiable to restrict access.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I'd vote Texas.  NM is OK if you are a resident.
