M77 Mk II 30/06SPRG

I traded for this standard Ruger 5 or 6 years ago after my eldest son was gifted my Rem 700 "06" which was my favorite rifle (loved the son more though), it was on the used rack but looked brand new.  I have not liked this rifle much at all, but have killed more deer with it than I can begin to remember.  The reason I have had ill feellings toward it is because the barrel would copper foul so quickly and then take forever to clean up again.  It has been pretty accurate for several shots but then the fouling starts in and the accuracy goes south.  Well, I decided to hand lap the bore of this wretched beast so I bought some soft fishing sinkers that are shaped like bullets at chinamart and picked one sized slightly larger than groove diameter and forced it through the bore with a wooden dowel rod to engrave/shape it to the bore, then I slathered some 400 grit lapping compound on the slug and proceeded to push it through the bore back and forth while reapplying compound a time or two, untill I thought I would either go nuts or my arm would fall off.  I didn't know if I did any good or not but took it to the range Sat. and put 25 rounds through it of test loads using the same powder that I used before this endeaver (H4831SC), and it gravitated to the same load that it liked before the lapping, only this time it shot one ragged hole with four rounds.  Then when I cleaned the barrel there was hardly any guilding metal at all in the bore, even less than a Shilen Matchgrade 264Win that I used to have!  I just had to tell someone but sorry to run on so long.

Been there done that!  Nice job.  Of all the rifles I own, I replace barrels on rugers nearly 100% of the time.
