revolver sight in ?
« on: May 10, 2011, 12:53:13 PM »
Ok my bolt action SP's I have always sighted in same as a rifle.  Stock on the bag bag under the grip, but I just had a base but on my RBH and need to sight in the reddot I mounted.  My question is what type of setup to use for initial sightin.  Can I lay the barrel on the bag?  Just looking for the most rock solid way to setup to sight in before I leave the bench.  When I know the scope is right I know bad groups are me not the equipment

You might want to try some groups with the butt on a sandbag and some using the bag under the hands or wrists. Be sure to cover the forward sandbag with carpet or other heavy material as cylinder blast sometimes cuts them open.  I think you'll need to know how it prints with the gun in a position closest to the way you'll use it.

In short, you are going to want to grip the gun same as you would in the field.  From a bench, holding the gun in both hands, with your forearms resting on a sand bag best simulates firing off hand.  If you rest the gun on the bags, it will be steady, and may give tight groups, but it will not hit in the same spot as off hand, as recoil will tend to bounce the gun off the bags.  Least this method has worked for me for years with heavy recoiling big bore revolvers.
