45 ACP Handy Finished
« on: May 10, 2011, 01:12:52 PM »
I completed my 45 ACP project today. Fired it. Shoots. Ejects. Love it. Low recoil, low sound threshold. I think it even looks pretty good. The sites installed are muzzleloader LOWVIZ. The height was dead even rear to front. Bottomed out, 4" low at 25y, easily adjustable. Not very precise but quick up and they jump right out at you. Fired some factory and Hand loads. On the 50y target, the hits in the orange are factory and the ones above are the hand loads which were 255g copper plated flat nose with 8.5g W231. The possibilities with hand loads are plentiful. Probably needs the barrel shot in and loads worked up but thats the fun.

Nice job!    Good looking rifle! ;)
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

Nice work!  I noticed the caption of one of the pics said 'press fit'.  Is the barrel held in with an interference fit?  Is there a pin or a weld?

BTW.  I'm not nit picking, I'm considering my options for a 45acp stub myself.

To answer a question, I wanted to cut it off just in front of the pivot point. Thread the blank, tap the stub. Screw it together and drill and tap a hole deep into the barrel and use a plug/long screw to hold tight. The machinist said he would have to make special tools to do this and why. Then solver solder the forehand lug on. He stated a press fit would never come out. Thus the forehand lug was left on and the barrel blank turned to exactly fit the stub, 1-1000th bigger. The rear part fit the chamber, shouldered on the forcing cone the front fit the bore. Stub in the oven 500 degrees 2 hours. Barrel in the freezer over night. Ready set go, barrel in, hit with a brass mallet, milled off flush. The two screws that hold the rear site on are deep and into the barrel. I don't think one could get it apart if desired. Cheaper, easier and quicker to press fit. Quote from the expert machinist.

You will love your 45acp carbine, I call mine the gongbuster. A 200gr LaserCast SWC will move a swinging steel target and make a satisfying gong sound at 100 yds. Congratulations, a good job on a fun project!

George,

Very nice job!  Keep us posted on the load workup as some of us are very interested. ::)

BTW,  George's 45 ACP reamer is headed my way and once my 45 ACP is finished, the reamer will be joining the H&R Reamer rental fleet.  There is already one member on the wait list.

Have you run any bullets past a chronograph?   Or, any others in the new "45 Carbine Club" that might have some speed data on their carbine?

A fellow on ammoguide has posted 45 ACP loads with a 16.5" barrel.  Approximate velocities are:

185 grn FMJ    1250+
200 grn FMJ    1190
230 grn FMJ    1090

He doesn't specify his gun but I know you can buy an aftermarket 16" barrel for a 1911 so these may have been fired from a pistol.

When my gun is finished I will chrony some loads.   I am going to be shooting factory loaded 45 Super, 200grain HP/XTPs.  These rounds chrony 1260 FPS in my 5" 1911 so hoping for in the 1400s from an 18" barrel.

O.K., here's stupid question number 923.  What's the point?  What will a .45 ACP do that a .357 Max, a .45LC,  .445 or a 500 won't do?  I shot thousands of ACPs in the navy years ago out of 1911s, Thompsons and Grease Guns.  The range was 50 yards from my office, and the armory was on the other side of the wall from my desk.  It's a great round to shoot, but why the expense and trouble to convert to it?

Here is my reason, for the heck of it. And. I like the idea of a rifle and hand gun using The same ammo. I have 45LC Handi and a ruger Blackhawk, both shoot the same loads. I now have an auto handgun and a rifle. The next is a 41 mag. I have the handgun and a rifle built on the same principle is very doable. It's a Handiholic thing. Although the handgun shoots better than some of my rifles.

Did you consider accomodating the rim for the .45 Auto Rim round?  I ask because as well as using a 1911, I also use the 1917 Colt and S&W revolvers, and stocked up on Remington .45 Auto Rim brass long ago.  I load a 250 gr. flatnose made for the .45 Colt with a rather hefty charge of Universal Clays.  I've tried loading that same bullet in the ACP case, as well as some of the heavier .452 jacketed bullets, and they bulge the ACP case, and do not in the AR case, and, I can put whatever crimp I want on the AR case, letting me get a more efficient burn with slower powders.  Shooters long ago found that the .45 Schofield cartridge, (the substitute standard in the Army for the .45 Colt cartridge) being shorter, was a lot more efficient than the Colt cartridge, and the .45 AR case makes even more efficient use of the svailable space.  I'm sending my Ruger .45 Blackhawk back to be fit for another cylinder specifically to have it modified for the AR cartridge, and I'm eyeballing a little Marlin 94 to see what it'd take to convert it.  Do you get the notion that I'm a fan of the round?
Something to consider.......
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." Stress relieved barrel in a caliber H&R doesn't offer.   In my case I also have about 6,000 rounds of 45 ACP brass.  The reality is, if you confine your hunting to N. America, the only CF rifle one needs is a 30-06.  Everything after the "ought 6" is just specialized nitpicking. ::)  Back me up on this Sourdough, please! ;D

Did you consider accomodating the rim for the .45 Auto Rim round?

It 'appears' from the pics that the breech end of the barrel may be recessed enough already to accommodate the rimmed version.  If not, a simple fix.

I bought a couple of the bargain-priced Green Mountain .451 barrels.  Why?  Planning to convert at least one of my Handi shotgun barrels and give me another 45ACP to go with my Sig 220 and USP Tactical - that I reload for.  May use the short 'leftover section' as a shotgun insert.  Just need to make some time to start 'making chips.'

BTW, I'm really liking the simplicity of the 'press fit' technique.

Per 'The Machinery Handbook' there are several levels of fit, you may probably review them online and should familiarize yourself with them if you arent already.

Airsporter,

The 45 ACP barrel blank I bought was also from Green Mountain.  I think it was listed as .452 not .451, maybe need to slug it.  Should be able to tell you how it works in a couple of weeks.

The blank I purchased was listed as 45 ACP. They also had listed 45 colt. As I was making an ACP that is what I bought. I  hand loaded about 50r yesterday. I loaded 20r with copper plated Flat nose listed at 451 dia with Unique. 20r, same bullet with W231. I also loaded 10r Trail boss using cast, sized to 452. These rounds did not fit well in the rifle. I lost three due to brass collapse and not belling the mouth. The cast did not chamber well. I have not slugged this barrel. I suspect this is 451 in the groves, as an ACP should. We will see. The cast bullets did not work at all in my auto. The project was for dual purpose not specifically for hunting. I am sure I can load hot for hunting in the carbine. Also the loads must fit the forcing cone in the ACP. 451 FMJ work great in the rifle, a project and interesting.

IIRC Lee makes a reasonably priced 'push through' sizing die in .451 for those casts.

I believe the fit described by gjdykeman is technically an "interference fit" where the liner barrel would be in the range of .0003" - .0018" larger than the hole bored in the donor barrel.  His in right in the middle at + .001".  Proper finish is important in obtaining a tight fit too.

very cool!
My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks
