Rimfire to match my specifications
« on: May 11, 2011, 07:17:33 AM »
I suspect savage might have a model but their introducing and dropping them ast such a rate that I can't keep up.  I am not comitted at all to this manufacturer however.  It should have;

Musts:
Bolt Action
Two action screws to secure the barreled action from beneath.

Wants:
High polished finish to barreled action
Walnut stock
Locking lugs rather than lock at root of bolt handle
Screwed in rather than pressed and/or pinned in barrel
Prefer tapped holes to receiver groove for mounting optics.

I occasionally see a Savage "classic" something or other which might make it as might a (discontinued) Browning micro, Ruger 77/22, or discontinued Remington 5xx.  Older models, if they have most of what I am looking for, are fine (actually better), and so are foreign makers.
Thanks.

There are some surplus polish training 22cal rifles for $299 being offered at www.centerfiresystems.com right now i'm not sure if this is what your looking for but it breaks the norm on the 22cal rifles. Do a search for "polish 22".

I think the requirement for 2 action scrrews is going to severely limit your choices - most of the other wants can be met by several rifles.

A few that come to mind are the Remington 880 series (881 and 882 I believe were the repeaters) and the 541S which was basically the same, but fancier.  All used multiple locking lugs (9 ?) on the rear of the bolt.  Also a Kimber or a CZ are quality rifles.  I'm not sure about the type of stock attachment on any of these - just a few ideas.

With the exception of drilled/tapped receiver for mounts, the CZ 452 American meets all of your specs. Unfortunately, you'd have to find one used, or in dealer stock because CZ has discontinued the American and is no longer shipping them other than with the 16" barrel and left hand versions.

All other 22 lr 452's have only one action screw. The 17 & 22 magnum 452s have two action screws but matt finished receivers. I have four CZ rimfires, all very accurate. I believe they're better made (as far as materials, design, fit & finish go) than any other new-made rimfire rifles in their price range.

My 452 American 22 lr top, 527 M1 American 223 bottom...
