Ruger Hawkey 6.5 Creedmore standard model?
« on: May 11, 2011, 06:38:57 PM »
Hey guys I've really been eyeballing a ruger hawkey in 6.5 creedmore.  I have a browning a bolt 260, but am getting bored with it.  Not only that it has a 22in barrel with a 1:10 twist.  I really like the hawkeye because it has the 24 in barrel with 1:8 twist and i prefer the heavier bullets. Has anyone here purchased on or shot one and can tell me about it's accuracy?  I have handled some hawkeys but just not in this caliber, and I thought it felt great. plus i love the mauser action anyway.  This is the standard model hawkey cause i'm partial to walnut and not plastic lol.. thanks for any help guys!

Cleveland:  Check closely on the Creedmoor Hawkeye barrel--mine is 26 inches (dunno 'bout the twist).  My 2010 Ruger catalog does indeed show a 24", 1:8 twist, and the Creedmoor isn't listed in the 2008 catalog.  Don't have an '09 catalog, but I sure got a 26" tube on mine-??!!   Haven't got a set of dies for it yet, still got a few rounds left from the two boxes of 129 Hornady's I picked up when I got the rifle.  Those will print less than an inch even with my 60 year-old eyes and several cups of coffee.  I've taken one hog with it so far, hit it high in the shoulder angling away and the slug ran up to the base of the off-side ear.  I'm thinking of going to 140s once I get the dies, though.  Check out www.65creedmoor.com when you get a chance.

Good shooting,
Dennis In Ft Worth

two questions please:

-whats the Creedmore got on the Rem?

-will you be able to get/make/form brass for it?
Though taken from established manufacturers' sources and presumed to be safe please do not use any load that I have posted. Please reference Hogdon, Lyman, Speer and others as a source of data for your own use.

There is a good article in the latest issue of "Rifle", or maybe it's "Handloader" I think it's handloader. The idea behind it is the brass is a bit shorter, but has the same case capacity ( shoulder blown out ), so bullets can be seated out a bit farther, and still be used in a short action.

Thanks Dennis I havn't touched it yet but i called ruger and they said their was some misprints in there catalogs. Some said 26 in barrel, and some have 28 in lol  The ruger website shows 24" but i hope it is a misprint cause i want the 26" barrel.  My 260 is a fine gun but it only has a 1:10 but still shoots 140 hornady sp very well. But the long bullets sit so deep in my powder colum I have to crush powder and seat past the cannelure for it to fit inside the detachable magazine. But the internet shows the hawkey to have a 1:8 twist which would be nice for my heavier bullets! I have an article too john that says use unique in 22-250 case and stick a 22 cal cleaning patch in there and they fire form perfectyl.  It was an article by john barnsess

The Hornady factory 6.5 Creedmoor brass is quite good & readily available. It is not the cheapest but not crazy either. The Hornady fact. Creed.
ammo is good to & Horn. even reveals the load so you can duplicate the load yourself. But is is a plus that you can form the brass economically as well.

I like the 260 also, but had lost interest in it until Lapua came out with 260 brass, that's nice. Both do about the same, I like the design of the Creed. a little better, but getting the rifle I want would outweigh which cartridge i wound up with.

Here is a good article:  http://demigodllc.com/articles/6.5-shootout-260-6.5x47-6.5-creedmoor/?p=1

You are right about wanting the 1-8 twist for the heavies.

I had a Browning A-bolt in 260. and the thing could not make a group under 3 in. So I had a E.R. Shaw barrel put on it and had it rechambered in 243 win. and it will make groups you can cover with a dime.

OK, nothing wrong with that if you wanted a 243 anyway, but the 3" groups had nothing to do with the 260 round.
