100 grain Federal SP in .243
« on: May 12, 2011, 11:50:52 AM »
I have not shot them for group size but it would appear that my encore pistol really likes them. It didn't like the 100 grain corlokts. I saw some 80 grain corlokts but after I saw how they shot in 100 grains I was affraid to spend my money on them.

I went to Rural King and bought my ammo this time. I usually go to Walmart but all they had was corlokts this time. I like going to Walmart because I get a discount! But I love Rural King as well. I worked there when I was in High School.

We tested the .243 100gr. Federal HiShok PSP Ammo in my buddies 15" T/C Encore. 5 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards averaged 2" at an average muzzle velocity of 2536 FPS.

We also tested the .243 80gr. Winchester Super X PSP Ammo in the same 15" T/C Encore. 5 shot groups were the same as the 100gr. Federals but the average muzzle velocity for the 80gr. Winchester Super X PSP Ammo was 2892 FPS.

In my buddiese 15" .243 T/C Encore we ended up working up a handload using 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzers (this is the bullet that Federal uses in their 80gr. HiShok Ammo) with H-4895 Powder to a muzzle velocity of 2920 FPS. 5 shot groups from the bench at 100 yards with this load average 3/4".

I used my buddies 15" .243 T/C Encore with the above Handload to take 2 Whitetail Does on afternoon during our antlerless season. Range was a bit over 200 yards and bullet performance was perfect.

You are very welcome. I have long been a .243/6mm fan. I have used the 6mm-223, 6mm T/CU and .243 Winchester in Handguns to take Whitetail Deer, most of which with the 80gr. Speer Hot Core Spitzer. The main problem is right now that I do not have a barrel chambered for a .243/6mm Cartridge.

On 7/12/2010 I fired Remington factory 100 grain CL from my 22-inch Remington 788 average velocity was 2748.  At the same session I fired the bottom of the Federal 100-grain load, average velocity was 2894.  The Federal group was also smaller then the Remington group.

One of the accuracy loads that day was with the old Solid Base Nosler 100-grainaveraging 3009 fps push by H414.

I settled on the 105 grain Speer at 2896 fps pushed by WMR as my hunting load.
