You made one heck of a gun, Moose; thanks for this thread.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

40 MM Rifled Breach Loader

Thank you . Shot some blanks yesterday , worked very well . The charge shown was 7 oz of home made powder. A stepped powder chamber is well suited to firing blanks , it creates enough back pressure to simulate firing a shell. Tried corn meal as a filler and found a corn meal plug went down range about 50ft before breaking up . Tried old casting plaster as a filler and preliminary findings are it completely disintegrates upon leaving the barrel. The shot gun primer indicates pressures are OK when using the reduced charge with a filler and the full blank charge . I also scored big today , the local bowling alley gave me 26 bowling balls for my future bowling ball cannon.

Good looking cannon and video, I was glad to see you were able to kill that evil looking
stick in front of the gun also....  ::)

Moose,  Awesome cannon and I enjoyed the video.  Thanks for posting it.  This project is an inspiration.  I have an idea now for a smaller version of your cannon on an 1880's style field carriage.  Dom

True Value Gloss Black Enamel in spray can , pleasantly surprised it acts like rustoleum ( takes a day or two to dry completely )  seems like its very tough. Was looking at other peoples primer snappers and got a good idea to improve the safety of mine . I milled a 1/4 slot for a vent in the event a primer ruptures , two primers have ruptured in the past and it really makes a mess of the snapper spring.

Made good progress on post sight . Still need to drill peep holes in sight blades , make lock nut and lock screw , and calibrate post. Then polish it up a bit. The little parts can take every bit as long as the bigger stuff to make.

Is the hinge ring threaded or do the breech block threads just slide through it?

Yes the hinge ring is threaded .Thought I might need to put a stop pin in the ring, but so far the ring is loose enough to back away when it just unscrews from the breech.

Yes the hinge ring is threaded.

So that simplifies things somewhat since interrupted threads would expect to slide out instead of unscrew.

As cool as they would be , it's hard for me to justify the added time and trouble needed to make interrupted threads when a full thread is so simple and works so smooth . And its not like we have anyone charging us . If I had a cnc mill it would be fun to try the 75mm Krupp breech , think the cool factor on that would be worth the extra trouble.

Almost have the sight done , just need to stamp the numbers in . Next step will be to get wooden wheels mounted and then paint the carriage

I am at that point where a scope may be necessary to continue shooting , need two pairs of glasses and magnifier lens to work in the shop. When I test this sight out at the range , I might need someone else to aim  :o

moose53,
The malcolm scopes are fairly easy to make and the lens are available on line. The lens company will also help you with the focal lengths. The SPG mag. had a good article a couple years back on how to build one. Costs very little. A few hrs to make.
Have one mounted on my ML. .38 slug gun and hope to have at least one done for the cannon before Camp Grayling to test.

Thank you ,didn't mean to say I couldn't see, just can't see the back sight ,front sight , and target at the same time . Not even close to what I was able to do a few years ago  ::) .Friend of mine gave me a 4 power rifle scope today ,will look into mounting it on my next cannon. Just looked at the Malcolm scopes ,they would be cool enough but I think I need to take it off for each shot to protect it from the shock . Was thinking about a pin located tripod mount as a auxiliary sight to standard sights.

The MicroSight looks like it will be a fix for a lot of shooters . Can't see the back sight , front sight , and target at the same time, is a common affliction. Will have to check it out, Thanks for the link.

Hey Moose53 !
We should probably talk; I have a very nice 40MM Bofors Demill BBL (Chamber cut off; 80" long still) and am getting ready to have threads ground directly on it.
You mentioned that you have an interset ion Bowling Ball Mortars; We built two of these that are the nicest examples I've seen so far. I'll attach pix for the board to ponder.
In may of last year, I inspected the one remaining full-size Whitworth in the stored collection at the Gettysburg Museum. I dimensioned and photographed it, and will post the pix if anybody is interested. It was really an amazing piece of technology for its time.
Share more of the 40MM build with us !

Love the Video!
It kinda looks like a Hotchkiss, a Whitworth and a 37mm AT Gun had a baby....
and a very straight shooting baby at that!

You pegged it pretty close . I was heavily influenced by Hotchkiss, probably more than any other cannons. And you can't hardly beat the Whitworth's breech handle.
