.17 HMR Problem
« on: May 14, 2011, 02:17:18 AM »
When I load my 14" 17 HMR, the edge of the case often slips over the edge of the extractor.  When that happens, of course, you cannot close the weapon.  The extractor does not appear to be bent nor does the edge that supports the rim seem damaged.  It's not the end of the world, it just means that you have to be careful when you position the case when loading.

Anybody else have this problem?

If the barrel has a SAAMI chamber or was cut with a dull or oversized reamer it may be a little loose, allowing enough extra play to jump the extractor.   Extractors can also be a loose fit, or be bent or worn.   Easy enough to fix just with your loading technique though I'd think with some downward pressure on the case as you slide it into the chamber.

There has been some problems with the 17 HMR ammo and some of it has been recalled If you get american rifleman there have been a number of notices there this may be your problem and not the barrel. I think the ammo was from Remington and being used in some auto loaders nothing said about single shot's I use CCI in mine and have had no problems.

NO  the recall was blow-back operated, semi auto rifles that fired a bottle neck cartridge and fired from an open bolt condition. Really dumb combo the blow-back gets the shoulder area dirty, the round does not seat properly but the gun can be fired anyway. Nothing wrong with the cartridge itself.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

FWIW the only problem with the ammo itself I have first hand knowledge of was before Hornady finally first released it for sale late spring 2002.   It was a configuration problem causing blow ups in the Savage and Marlin rifles they were using to test it.   I did some of the testing for them and Bullberry a couple of months before they made the ammo available for retail sales.   They reconfigured the ammo and all has been well since with the ammo itself.

BTW, at least at one time (if not still) the ammo is all made by CCI (Hornady, Remington, CCI  at least, maybe Federal and Winchester too).

You probably need a new spring on the extractor.  If you feel like changing it yourself, T/C would probably send you one for free.  If you want them to fix it, you can send the barrel to them.

A sloppy extractor can be shimmed. Steel cans make good shimstock.
