Hello,

I bought a Taurus Tracker 991 yesterday (14MAY11).  I went home that evening to clean it up to get ready for my plinking day at the local range.  After about 20 to 40 rounds on different target distances, I was able to get this bad boy sighted in well to keep some nice tight groupings with Hornady 30gr V-Max rounds.  At the 9th reload (81 rounds), I noticed that I loaded 9 rounds, yet 8 only fired... I opened the cylinder and noticed that around 4 shots back, the pistol missed a whole chamber!!!
I stand there perplexed on how this could have happened and as I closed the cylinder up to chamber the non-fired round, I noticed that the cylinder just spins.  It doesn't catch in place as it should.  I have shot under 100 rounds from this pistol that I have owned for less than 24 hours and it is broken.  Probably the worst $350 that I have ever spent on a firearm.
I went back to the dealer and I am assuming he is sending it back to Taurus to get fixed.  What I don't understand is why should I get a gun fixed that I have owned for less than 24 hours???  Taurus should give me a new one  or maybe even give me some other better choice.  I am very dissatisfied by the quality of this revolver.
Any suggestions on what I should do besides just sit on my hands?

Thanks,

Unfortunately it sometimes happens , I have one of the older Trackers in 45 colt with well over 10,000 rounds through it and not so much as a hic-up , however over the years I have had to send just about every brand back for repair , so don't feel too bad .

Ya , I know its a PITA , but they will fix it and you will be shooting again in no time , look on the bright side , atleast you didn't have to send it back with a cyl full of loaded rounds like I did with my Ruger 357 mag . >:( :'( :(

Eh... I own a lot of H&K's, Kimbers and Glocks.  Never had an issue.  The first Taurus I own and its defective.  Such a disappointment.  I hope there are customer service agents of Taurus who reads these forums.

When you are the guy with the broke gun reading about how wonderful several other peoples gun is
sucks. Over the years, I'm past 60, I have been the guy that was always lucky enough to buy that one in a thousand lemon that Remchester, or Colt and Wesson made. It has happened enough over the years that I go over any gun I'm interested in looking for even the smallest problem. I own handguns  from most of the main companies and as luck would have it Taurus is the only one I have
not had a problem with. Thanks to my good luck some friends have bought Taurus and got junk. From that I have learned that having the dealer deal with them seems to work better. Something about a dealer sending one back the second or third time opens a different line of communication to the idiot that should have fixed it right the first time.
I buy them because so far out of the box they have shot better groups than even my preformance center guns. The double action is heavy but the single action has been great. This is with over 2 dozen revolvers in from .17HMR to .454. Good luck

My like new "only ever" Python had to go in for repairs.  I finally gave it to my son to play with.
A friend's Python also had to go in for repair.  This summarizes my experience with Pythons.

I guess they are junk.  I won't buy another.

Ditto;  On the pythons my brand new 70's python had cylinder timing problems but i could ping small rocks on the berm at 100yds with my 140jhp speer reloads.  I'm sorry i parted with it i should of got it repaired.

I just purchased a like new looking taurus m94 in 22lr.  Its a sweet little 22 - 9 shot revolver.   I say get your repaired and never look back.  I find the more guns we buy were going to get a lemon sooner or later.  Heck i had 4 lemons in a row when i first got into handguns.  I'm never giving up because little by little i'm becomming a gunsmith thru being pushed into it because of non operating guns.   CZY

BTW;  I figure the prices on the taurus and charter arms 22's revolvers there hard to beat when the S&W 22 revolvers are priced out of site.  I'm not going to give my step grandson an around 1k 22 revolver to shoot. Don't forget to lube the spur on the rear of the cylinder that turns it so we don't end up wearing it out because of timing problems.  Let nothing run dry and it will outlast our lifetimes i'm sure, lube the inners too i moly it all up.

1911 crazy:  that's good advice on the lube and maintenance issues. I have done the same on all my weapons (not just pistols) and it has paid off in great dividends. I have found that the older pistols in the revolvers SEEM to have been better made than some of Q.C. issues that seem to pop up more frequently on the newer models ( all makes). just my .02cents worth and I been playing with them all for over 58 years (I'm 66) God Bless to all.

$20 says it comes back the same way. I had a 450 do the same thing particularly when fired rapidly in DA. (slow fire it worked fine. . I sent it in and it came back indicating it was OK. It did the same thing when I took it out again. I finally figured out the cylinder stop was hanging up in it's slot allowing the cylinder to over rotate. I took it apart polished it with fine emmery cloth and it worked perfect after that................. After 2 more Taurus guns I'm learning that a little polishing goes a long way......
Just another worthless opinion!!

Years ago when I worked on the job, I had the same thing happen after a day at the range with a S&W Mod 19.  I had practiced with full powered 357 mag dept factory loads.  Later that night in Oakland Ca, I had a situation that required the use of deadly force.  I pulled the trigger double action, and it went click...... cocked the hammer back and it went BANG.  The double action cycling timing had been thrown off by shooting full powered loads.  Needless to say, the problem was fixed and model 19 was sold.

Many revolvers can have issues, and it just depends when its going to happen.

Sorry about your Taurus problems.  I haven't had any problems with the ones I own. It sucks to get a brand new gun and have nothing but problems. Hopefully you can get yours repaired and shooting again.

I have always like visiting the Taurus/Graybeard site over the years due to the garbage guns they put out.  Traditionally some good reading, glad I sold my Taurus guns years ago.  However, I am not seeing the griping like we had 10 years ago, seems they improved something.

Might get one as they are cheaper than a Smith, if things stay quiet on the problems for a few years.

I bought a Taurus 1911 and with over a thousand rounds with all types of ammo I've not had a proplem. Accuracy is still great.
About 6 years ago I bought a Browning hi power. Jam, jam, jam after 200 rounds. Sent it back to Browning. Worked fine for 50 rounds then jam, jam, jam. Sent it back again. They returned it and it now works fine.

Worst gun I ever bought was a Ruger Super Blackhawk.  I special ordered it because no one on island carried it.  When it arrived NIB the loading gate was so ill fitting it would not close all the way but it flopped around and looked like crapola.   Also there were grind marks on several places on the frame.  I was pretty PO'ed but they were rare enough in my locale that a CAS guy bought it from me for the price I paid defects and all.  With the money from the sold Ruger I bought a Taurus model 44 in 44 mag and this gun has been 100% awesome for over 12 years.  Defective guns are not exclusive to Taurus.  I currently own 3 Taurus (Tauri?) and I'm happy with them though my first Taurus a model 94 22 pistol had to go back for a new rear sight, and new hammer spring as it had FTF 33% in DA mode.  Had it back in 2 weeks in great shape.  this was 15 years ago, and it has been 100% reliable ever since.

I've owned 5 Taurus gun and have sent two back, both fixed to my satisfaction, and both were issues they probably could have refused to fix.  What I have learned though is that you must be very specific about what the problem is.  A commemt like 'fix as necessary' or 'this is a P.O.S.' will not get the job done.  One of my Gaucho's (my favorite shooting single action) came with a too short front sight.  I gave it to my favorite gunsmith to send back and he sent the note 'fix as necessary' as he forgot what the problem was.  If I had not called and talked to them while they had the gun, I would have gotten it back in the same condition as everything was working corectly mechanically.  As it was they put a new barrel on with the correct height front sight and sent if back to me.  I'm happy!
The second Gaucho to go back didn't line up the cylinder holes in the middle of the loading gate.  That's a common problem with many single actions I have owned and it's easy enough to fix at home, but since it was under warranty, why not send it in?  So it went back and came back with the proper adjustment.  They are very willing to fix the problem, but as I said, you must be very specific as to what the problem is.  Otherwise they will cycle the action a few times, if it appears ok, send it back, same as my own gunsmith if he doesn't know what it's doing for me.  Call them, tell them the problem, send it in with a very specific note, call them again in a couple weeks and remind them what the problem is.  You should be able to have good factory service from them, as I did.  And just for the info, I have had problems with Rugers, EMF's, Uberti's, and Colt's also.  44 Man

Had 2 go back for cylinder timing or not locking up. Came back worse than ever or marked up. Looks as if someone used a dremmel on it....took months and numerous times back and never got it right. S-W and Ruger for me........
