Gell cell batteries
« on: May 15, 2011, 05:34:59 AM »
Educate me about these new gell cell batteries. I need to buy a new battery for my Mean Streek and was thinking about trying a gell cell. Are they good and trouble free or no.

I ran two gell cell batterys in both my Jeeps. One for the jeep, and one for the winch. Both deep cycle, and both dependable. I like'em.

they dont last any longer than a wet cell . you just dont have to worry about them leaking acid everywhere.i run one on my rockcrawler because i needed to mount it laying down flat and on my atv so it will not leak on hills like my old wet cell did

My 1500 Goldwing wouldn't start with a regular battery when the temp got below the high teens (crazy hunh?) and when the last battery died I went to Interstate Battery and bought one of their sealed wet cell batteries and it is the best bike battery I have ever used.  The Wing will start no matter how cold the temp this past winter and very easily.  I know it isn't a gel battery but it works right!

The gel cell is an excellent choice for a bike, quad or anything else that maintains a constant charge on a minimal charge rate and has no high discharge loads such as use on a winch as an example.  Odds are you don't have a winch on your bike.   ;D  Although they are more expensive to purchase, if maintained properly they will last much longer than a standard wet cell due to their limited gassing.  A lot of folks mistake the Optima batteries for gel cells and they are NOT.  They are spiral cell technology which is a whole new ballgame.  I have a gel cell running a portable starter that i bought in somewhere around 1982 to 1985 that still works like new.

Hey pastorp, how's that battery holdin' up??  I'm a little late lookin' in here, but if you want model specific info, and are not already a member.  I'd like to invite you to look at VROC.  Vulcan Riders and Owners Club.  The web page is vroc.org.  Lots of meanie riders, along with other models.

See ya
