45/70 BC Experiment.
« on: May 16, 2011, 09:37:26 PM »
Aloha,

Those with a 45/70 BC might want to try a really subsonic loading that will astound you.

The load:  405 gr cast lead bullet over six (6) grains of Trail Boss.
The target: A 4" X 6" post 25 yards out.

Results: The lead bullet will completely penetrate the six inch side a little less quietly than a .22 with out the supersonic crack. Down load by one half grain and repeat the half grain reduction until the report     is  less than an air rifle. Use a different aiming point for each shot as you will be shooting through  the same hole negating the penetration test. Caution: Do a visual to confirm the bullet exited the barrel.

After settling on your best subsonic load move the post to fifty yards so you can make sight adjustments or new aiming point at targets between 25 to 50 yards.

Wasn't that interesting. Now get comfortable, grab a cup of coffee and try to think of a tree stand or a hide that would allow you to fill your freezer with some critter more fragile than a 4 X 6  without disturbing your neighbors. Enjoy.

Honolulu.

Welcome!

I haven't tried TB but have loaded subsonic using 525 grain lyman postells and 700X.  Bullets where shot from a 18.5" 45-70 so probably more noise than a 32" BC barrel.  Anyway, I loaded a number of different charge weights and had velocities as low as 830 FPS and as high as 995 FPS.  Gun with these loads is minute of deer @ 100 yards, no problem.  A friend shot some of these rounds in his 45/70 double barrel & thinks they would work well for deer hunting.   I did notice that these rounds tended to expand a lot on impact and tore golf ball size holes in a the metal backstop.  This same bullet a 1500+ fps makes a nice clean hole in the metal target.  Bullet was stable, not thumbling.

Did you chrony your loads?  I would think if  you get the velocity low enough you may loose the stability of your projectile.

That is very cool. We use a 12 gr TB load with a 405(-edit - cast) and it is like shooting a 410, but is also as loud as a 410. I didn't think you could go that low wt. gr. wise.... I thought you had to be 70-100% of capacity. 100% being flush to the bottom of the seated bullet. So I thought 6 gr would be on the low side but I suppose depending upon where you seat your bullet and if you are using a hollow base 405 or a flat base.... (oh and our 45-70s both have 22 inch barrels)
I love what Trail Boss offers the hand loader. Very fun powder to work with.  thejanitor

Caution: Do a visual to confirm the bullet exited the barrel.

Although they can be used with TB powder, this load data is not for jacketed bullets.  No sane man wants to push a jacketed bullet out of a rifled barrel, especially one that is 32" long.

Thanks, Dinny

Altho not quiet, Im loading a 405gr bullit to 1280fps. its giving me 3"groups at 200yds.I started with 30 in 1 alloy and then tried 20 in 1. the groups have shrunk with the harder alloy. I have the micro groove barrel. and Im going to try two harder alloys next. who knows maybe I need to slow them up a bit. DR

Wheel Weight metal with a dash of Tin for castability, BHN 8-10ish, if you want/need harder water quench from the mould. Use as cast for full dia. if they will fit in your fired case mouth.
Even so, you are getting good 200yd groups with basically a duplicate of the original carbine load.

If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

I love Trail Boss, but I wouldn't go to 6gr. By IMRs info ( http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf ) 11.2grs in the 45-70 is the least that should be used. I use 16grs. of Trail Boss in my 45-70 and shoot it in both my Handi and my Sharps with very good results, I also use it in my 45lc.
