Slugs in Rossi Modified Choke Shotguns

New to this forum, and I searched on some older threads/ discussions about subject.
Some users report using slugs no problems.
This is for the PICK4 Youth Model, but others have .410/ 22 combo sets.
Our Youth Set is 20GA and .410

Rossi says NO SLUGS, so I wanted to get feedback on this. Maybe they shoot fine, it's just a warranty issue with Rossi.

  I can't speak specifically to Rossi, but the old modified choke shotguns of the 40s and 50s (long before slug barrels) handled slugs just fine.  many deer were harvested with those old shotguns.  My dad used an Ithaca 20 gauge mod choke to kill many a buck.  I can recall very old Iver Johnson singles, Crescents, Western Field and many others, including doubles, working just as well with the old Foster style slugs..
  Of course, this rules out the old "damascus" style barrels...they would turn into a spring !

I have the Rossi .410/.22  youth combo my son and I shot the cheapo Winchester superx 2.5 inch foster slugs at 25 feet, my nine year old son got fist size groups with them we also shot some federal judge loads these were 2.5 inch with 3 OOO buck, at 25 feet it was one big hole the judge loads shot very well out of the short modified choke on the youth barrel, this gun is about 8 years old, so maybe something has changed but never heard you couldnt shoot slugs out of these guns, for us this is a perfect pack gun , when taken apart it fits nicely in common backpacks, in fact I am making a padded insert to hold the pieces so they dont nock around inside, I am going to do further tests with buck and ball loads the .22 barrel shots very good also, would love to hear how the pick 4 performs, I think these combos are a good deal, and the youth .410 combos actually fit youngsters! I will research the no slugs warning, was this in youre owners manuel?

Just got the pick 4 and manual (I posted prior to receiving ). A quick review of the manual dooes not mention it. This was told to me by customer service at Rossi after I called them to verify the 3" chambering on both .410 and 20GA.
I have to read each page and warning now in the manual, so I did not read it there, only tolds to me on the phone.

    Not telling you to do so but I've fired slugs through newer H&R .410 shot barrels and through the .410 of my grandaughter's Rossi 22/410 combo.  Naturally, you should pay heed to the allowable shell length, usually stamped on the barrel.

Gun laser thanks for the reply,  I will dig out my manual to see if there is any warnings on slugs, on a side note, these youth combos fit younger shooters well, but they are very lightweight and you have to be careful with the 20 gauge version of the youth combo as the recoil can be brutal with standard and up loads, please post feedback on youre experiencs with the pick 4 this forum needs more discussion on the rossi singles

I've shot slugs through my Trifecta Youth 20 gauge with no problems.  Use only the Foster style rifled slugs, since they squeeze down to fit through the barrel choke.  It packs quite a wallop.  I don't like shooting it much for that reason.

Read my owners manual for rossi combo twice yesterday and there was no warning about shooting slugs thru the shotgun barrels of either the .410 or the 20 gauge as I have access to both sets I have not tried slugs thru the 20 gauge combo but have shot several thru the .410 with excellent accuracy at 25 feet maybe I will call Rossi and see what they say, also does any one know if Rossi will sell stocks and forends separately? thanks

Thanks for looking at your manuals. I had to leave on a trip,a nd could not spend much time on detail manual reading. My quick look found what you confirmed. I'd like to see if they tell you the same thing.
I did buy some slug shells for .410 (brass Golden Bear in 3", as well as some SABOT slugs for the 20GA.
As far as barrels, Rossi told me that one can not get additional barrels for sets/ pairs. The only exception is their newer WIZARD: 21 barrels available and always interchangeable.
Again on pairs/ sets It's just what Rossi said- who know maybe someone had tried swapping barrels from other sets/ pairs.

I'm no Rossi ace, but I've noticed the combo's with centerfire barrels have a MUCH heavier frame  than the 410/22 combo I bought the grandkids.  That may be a factor in what Rossi CS said.  That 410 barrel on that light frame and composite stock kicks like a mule with 3" loads, at least for a 410 it does.  I only buy the kids the short bird shot.

I don't know how little the young ones are but that is a factor you may consider.

Full a sock with BB's and stuff it in the stock. Recoil tamed. If it still bothers you, use lead shot.

I've shot 2 1/2" winchester and the remington sluggers from the .410 rossi my dad has with no problems. Actually shot pretty decent. He has a full size gun, modified choke. The rossi 410's are a much smaller frame than H&R's but still handled the slugs just fine. We shoot 410 slugs from that old H&R with a full choke all the time, they shoot great and with no problem. scout4<><
