HELP! Seating SSP Hornady pointy bullets in the 357 Maxi?
« on: May 18, 2011, 08:32:00 AM »
Hello.

Looking to reload some .357 Max loads with RCBS carbide dies and the Hornady SSP 180grn bullets that seem to be made for the Maximum.

What do you reloaders use when you use that same bullet to make your own reloads?

If you're using RCBS dies, the seater plug in the .38 / .357 Mag / .357 Maxi combo's do not come with an approriate seater plug for seating .35 caliber spitzers ......

What solution have you found?  So when loading that single-shot .35 cal Hornady pistol bullet you do not crush or deform that pointed projectile?

I can find a seating plug for the Speer 180 grain .357 Silhouette bullet, but no seating plugs that would even serve in a .358 Winchester or .35 whelen  RCBS seating die.

Would "winging it" with a .308 caliber seating plug be worth a try?  (largest diameter or caliber seating plug I have found for a spitzer bullet!).

Thanks for any input or suggestions.

Lee will make you the appropriate seater of the SSPs for their 38/357 seat die.  I think Pete got one from them last year.   Maybe RCBS will do the same?

I use Lee dies and load and crimp in two sepparet operations and it does not deform the tips, you might try drilling the center of the seater plug out some for the tip of the bullet to rest in,I'v done this for other seater plugs and works pretty good.

I have heard of people drilling them out.

I bought Hornady dies so I could avoid this problem.

Thanks everyone!

I like your suggestion Dave, best of all.

I already have .30/06 RCBS dies with an appropriate seater plug that will also fit my RCBS .357 dies (turns out), so I will try that substitution!  Might take a week or 10 days but will try to post again with a report when its done.

The RCBS .357 combo-carbide die set comes with three seater plugs; round nose, wad cutter, and a truncated design obviously for the Speer silhouette profile I mentioned about.  Even getting a seater plug for any of the Speer Gold Dot bullets of various weights are additional purchases.  ::)

I expect the .30 caliber seater to (barely perhaps) to work.   ;)

I have the same set as you. I sacrificed one of the seating stems and gouged out a larger space in the end with my Dremel. After that, I filled it with JB Weld. After coating the 180gr SSPB with release agent, I placed it in the end. I let it harden overnight and then removed the bullet and cleaned-up the overflow. Now I have a seater plug that is made specifically for that bullet.

I used that for quite a while until....I bought a set of older RCBS dies that were made specifically for the Maxi. I replaced the seater plug with one from the .35 Rem/.35 Whelen as it's made for pointy bullets.

Since I don't use the modified seater plug anymore, you can have it. Send me a PM with your address and I will try to get it mailed this week.

Thanks, Dinny

Thanks for the offer Dinny, but keep it for the next guy!

I got curious enough to snag the seater plug from my .30/06 RCBS dies and that seater plug will work fine!  Its @ 1/4 inch shorter than the pistol seater plugs, otherwise the threaded stem is the same overall design and 1/4-28 fine thread pattern.

The .35 cal Hornady SSP bullet fits in it like they were meant to be.  Thanks again for the offer.   :)

I'm glad you found something that will work. We can't have a Maxi shooter going without ammo...

Thanks, Dinny
