There's a reason you find a lot of Crosleys with low mileage for the age. They didn't run very long when they did run. You didn't buy one of them back then unless you were REAL handy with wrenches. About the best thing you could say about one is that they got fabulous gas mileage. But sometimes passing a greenlight was an issue with the lawn mower horsepower they made. Neighbor had 2 of them, both wagons, one a 1947 and the other a 1948. Never had issues with mosquitoes after he went down the road.

My father had a 1962 Studebaker Lark Daytona. It came with a 289V8, 4 speed trany with a Hurst shifter from the factory. I think it was a replica of a pace care from some race...

I had a 60 Lark 2 door wagon. I got it with low miles from an estate sale and it was always breaking down. It must have set in a damp garage because every ball or roller bearing in the car failed in shot order. After replacing the transmission (3 on the tree with overdrive) and all the wheel bearings, I drove it for quite awhile before the engine failed. As things go, I was too broke to fix it at the time so I had to let it go. The cool thing about this car was if you ran the front bench seat forward, the back would lay flat and make a bed with the back seat. As a young man, I hoped to use this feature but never did...

Most unusual I've owned would be a 86 Saab 900, I'm probably the only person outside of Sweden to transport a dead deer on top of one.

The rarest was a 1991 Oldsmobile custom cruiser wagon

When I was a kid our family car was a 59 El Camino

When I was in college, gas got high and I sold my 70 SS Chevelle and got a Triumph Spitfire. Both were fun but not the most practical. The Triumph had the side draft carb that required oil and it required constant maintenance. The transverse leaf spring and independent suspension made replacing u-joints a common occurance. It also contributed to some unplanned 360 degree spins in loose gravel.

we had 2 at 1 time, a Hudson Hornet and a Diamond T pickup, pretty sure they were both 49's, I have always ben game for dragging car and truck projects home, now in the stable, 39 IH half ton, 47 crosley, 48 Chev 4 dr, 55F100, 61 Stude PU, 66 Fairlane ranchero, 67 Jeep Gladiator, 67 Mercedes fintail,, got a few more but all above 1970!

I was never one for the muscle cars, although i did have a 1957 Chevy coupe (red&white) V8 w/stick.
My brother had one that I rather wish I had today..it was a 1950 Jeepster (yellow)..about like the one below..

Oh yea Dads Rambler wagon the best car for parking, all the seats would lay back so it was flat from the dash to back door.

+1 on the Rambler Wagon......my dad had a '58.....I got it in high school....interior worked well

My 1961 (?) Sunbeam Imp, IIRC 'made in Scotland', a little rear inline slant 4cyl with go-cart handling (and almost size) mini hatchback. BIG mileage though, I saved enough in gas costs, even then, to pay for it, just before it died.......Total junk, but it was 'British' and unique among my friends, so I loved it.
The '59 Austin A-35 ranked right up there too........then the Sunbeam Alpine roadster (no, not the Tiger, sadly).......or the Studebaker Commander Coupe......geesh, where does it end; those were the days!

My Dad an Mom had an Edsel I think it was about a 1960. That I remember it actually was a really good car! scout4

My uncle had an Edsel convertible, red with white interior. I loved that gyro speedo. It got rear-ended by a bus, but he was a body man and he fixed it.

Edsel Ford
The Edsel was decried by some as a poor car, but it was nothing more than a Ford Fairlane (IIRC) in different clothes.
Well, OK.....I know there are a bunch of guys who will say the Fairlane was a 'poor car' too...........All I can say is that my old Fords really started, ran and required as much repair as my other old cars by other makers (except my British cars, which were.....ummm.....'exceptional').

I think Edsel was Henry's son. He died at a fairly young age - middle aged - which is ironic since so did the car that bore his name. I read once that most of the people who bought them would have otherwise bought a Mercury, another Ford brand.

In 1959 my father brought home a 1958 Mercury with the Super Marauder engine. This was a 430 cubic inch engine producing 400 HP and was a factory option available only for the 1958 Mercury. It came with 3, 2 barrel carbs and was capable of zero to 60 times of the low 7 seconds. Not bad for a large sedan of 4300 pounds with 3 speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. The car my father bought only had around 6,000 miles on it and the previous owner had replaced the factory manifold of 3, 2 barrel carbs with a custom made manifold with 2, four barrel carbs. This was a dream come true for a 17 year old like me that loved power and speed. All I can say is there was not a car in the area that could keep up with the Merc although I recall my father was frequently having to get it tuned as the carb set up often had problems. While I was in college, dad traded it in on a new Dodge Dart with a 6 cylinder engine to get better gas mileage to pay for my education. Great memories of a super fast car at the beginning of the muscle car era.

Perhaps my favorite car, a true King of the Road was my 1969 Ford XL convertible that I ordered new with the big 429 and air!

It had it all. Looks, power and more power. I drove it 200,000 miles!

It looked like a mini-Unimog and powered by a two cylinder BMW motorcycle engine.

I re-built that engine and don't have a single picture to show

1980 VW pickup, with vinyl letters on the bumper that said "russia sucks". I think he was talking about the hockey team. My mom made him take it off.
