City Cougars
« on: May 20, 2011, 04:04:06 AM »
Cougar killed in Roseburg Oregon!
I live in a small town about twelve miles north of Roseburg, and we have sightings near our schools almost every year. Thanks to our Oregon Department Of Fish And Wildlife you can no longer hunt Cougar with dogs, so the populations soar. You can still hunt them and the agency loves to sell you a tag, but try to get a big cat without a dog!Our deer populations are at all time lows, and the cats move into town for easy meals. Pet's today, and it could be our children soon.

I'll trade ya a thousand sea lions for one mountain lion.  Actually, we've got plenty of mountain lions already, so you can have the sea lions for free.

Meow! Joggers are so yummy!

I wonder how many attacks there are in California and Oregon by cougars every  years. It's a regular news item.

Know what you mean.  We have the same problems with Wolves and Bears.  We finally beat the environmental groups and are now killing Wolves and Bears.  Keep a close eye on the kids.  I would say give them a gun, but you can not get away with that down there.

I worked with a guy that lost his two kids and wife to a wolf pack  attack in Mongolia as they were walking to school. He said it happens there every so often.

The police killed a cougar in downtown El Paso Tx last week. Not by far the first time.

IIRC, the current tally in California is three female joggers dead and one male bicyclist badly mauled in the last decade or so. (I escaped from the People's Republic some years ago, so I no longer pay much attention.)

Some California acquaintances of mine claim that there has been an increase in unexplained disappearances of lone joggers and hikers in the foothills. That may or may not be true, and may or may not be due to cougars.

We've all seen these blissful fools jogging along with headphones on, oblivious to their surroundings. They're serving themselves up on platters to any handy predator, be it two-legged or four-legged.

In spite of the increase in encounters with four legged and other wild critters, the two legged menaces are by far ones biggest concern whether out in the wild, or in poopulated areas.

The wife came in and was reading over my shoulder.  She saw the title "City Cougars" she just knew a bunch of old men were talking about dirty old women.  She refused to read the article or to believe me.  She had to leave to warn her son about City Cougars.

We have a big wild fire just north of town, and are on alert for wild life coming into town to get away from the fire.  We are all going armed now.

I'm not in the city, but only 6 miles out and I've had a cougar sit in the cottonwood tree outside my garage.  He seemed to know that it was safe as long as the kids were around, and the dogs in the pen didn't bother him.  He finally met his demise at a nearby park when he jumped two dogs that were out hiking with their well armed owner!  My area of Nevada has lots of mountain lions and good luck catching one without dogs.

I saw one on my land in Virginia about 1994, but I've stopped talking about it because no one believes me.  I was hunting with 2 guys who were brothers and by agreement if one of them got a deer I would stay on stand while they checked it in.  I heard a shot, then heard them drive out and about 10 minutes later it came from the same direction.  I had about 5 seconds on it from about 50 or 60 yards, wasn't even sure what it was till I went home and looked it up since we never even think about them in the east.  First patch of color I thought it was a deer but no question - round head, pointy little ears and a tail like the rope at the movie theater.  Must have been an old one with a white face.  He came to a low spot - probably muddy - scooched his feet up and jumped across so he wouldn't leave a track.  We even heard it the night before - sounded like someone being murdered down in the same draw.  One guy jumped out of his chair and stood there going "What was that?" over and over.  This was a guy who had camped and hunted in Virginia a lot more than me.

There were a rash of sightings around then - later the state admitted they had turned a dozen loose to control the deer on the Skyline Drive.  They were supposed to be neutered and collared, but I didn't see a collar on this one.  It is believed that rich people buy cubs and then turn them loose after the thing looks at them funny once or twice, but they're not supposed to do well since they never learned to hunt properly.  This one looked like he was doing OK.  The farmer gave me hell for not shooting it since people up and down the road had seen it too, but I was just astounded and not even 100% sure what it was.  I think he knew he almost bought he farm.  I let the hammer down on my muzzel-loader real quiet, but I was so excited I didn't pull the trigger when I put it back to the safety notch and it let out a crack I'm sure he heard.  I got up to see if I could catch another glimpse of him but I knew I was never going to see that animal again.

I remember seeing on the news a couple weeks back that they caught one up in Tulsa.
For years the wildlife dept. has denied any in the state.
I guess that cat will put an end to that claim. ;D

OOOPS - When I first read the title of the post, I thought you were talking about older women...:)

Actually, I remember when I was a kid in CT, there was a guy who complained to the DEP about a cougar that was hanging around his house in Newtown, CT.  The DEP said he was mistaken, no big cats in CT.  The following weekend, he snapped a photo of it on his kids swing set in his back yard.  It was on the front page of the Newtown Bee newspaper the next day.  Granted, in may have been an escaped pet, but never say never.  I don't believe that cat was ever caught.

a guy in iowa (i believe) was deer hunting and called the dnr asking about the status of cougars in iowa (endangered, protected, etc.).  the dnr said there are none in iowa, and they are an unprotected species as such.   he asked them if they were sure, they said yup, he said "hang on a second..." put the phone down and BOOM!  shot a cougar out of a tree near his deer stand.   that is funny.

In Mississippi where we don't have any Cougars/Mountain Lions, My nephew and several others around RULEVILLE, Ms saw the non exsistant cougar repeatedly. Bears often cross the Mississippi River west of Ruleville, near Rosedale, Ms where the Arkansas River joins the Mississippi River, when the river is low and the bears are usually killed by cars. Guess a car will have to kill a Cougar for them to exsist In Mississippi. ear

We have them here and they are finally admitting it. A neighbor lady caught a pair on video and I have photos of tracks just accross the road from my house. Want a laugh? When I lived in St. Louis, and my kids were small, they came running into the house yelling, "Dad there's a lion in the alley!" Naturally I thought yeah right, shut the heck up and go back out and play. However they were so obviously upset I knew something must be wrong. I told them to stay inside and I walked out into our back yard which the level of was about 6 foot above that of the alley. I walked up to the fence and looked right. Nothing. Looked left. Nothing. Looked down.......CRAPOLA!!!!!!!  :o There staring up at me was a full grown mountain lion! In the city of St. Louis no less!!!!! After a long staring contest a couple guys came running up and put a chain on it's collar which I had failed to notice. lol Turned out it was a pet and they had been trying to give it a bath, which it didn't want! Soooo it broke loose and took a stroll. I can tell you this much. From then on I believed any thing my kids told me!  ;D
