Was reading about the Cougars and made me think about the kids out at my friends mine.
I have a friend that has a big gold mine south of town, out in the bush. He hires a bunch of guys each summer, and some of them bring along their families. The kids are turned loose around the cabin area to ply and do what ever they want to do while Dad and sometimes Mom is up the creek operating equipment. Other Moms will be in the cabin cooking or doing other work, giving minimal supervision to the kids.
My Dad came up for a visit, and to go hunting. My wife put him on a plane and flew him out to the mine. I'd pick him up later that day. Dad saw the kids running around playing and having fun. He thought this is great for these kids, a good place for them. Dad went inside to get coffee and sat down with the cook to a piece of pie. Suddenly a kid about 11 or 12 came running through the door yelling, "I'm going to kill that sXX XX a XXXXX". Grabbed a rifle that was sitting behind the door, and ducked back out the door. Dad and the Cook both took off running to the door and on outside. Just as they reached the door BANG, there stood the kid with the rifle.
Dad expected to see another kid lying dead or injured, and was in panic. Dad told me later he broke out in a sweat, and got to shaking all over. The kid came strutting back to the door saying "I got that SXX OX A XXXXX", and pointed across the creek. Dad looked across the creek and saw something flopping around over there, about 250 yards away. Then the smaller kids started shouting "Albert shot a bear, Albert shot a bear". Dad realized the kid had shot a bear of some type. The creek was too deep and fast to wade across, so the kid told Dad to start the truck and drive over there. Dad drove one of the trucks and he and the kid went across the river to make sure it was dead. The kid jumped out, grabbed a chain and asked Dad to back the truck up to the bear. When Dad did that the kid hooked the chain to the Pentle Hook on the back of the truck. Dad drove back to the cabin dragging the bear. It was a 6 1/2 ft Grizzly.
Never decided what upset Dad the most. The fact there was a Grizzly that close to the cabin. The young kid shooting the Bear. Or the kids language.
Do know Dad was paranoid of bears the rest of his trip. Good thing we left when we did. Three Bears were killed at the cabin we were staying in, within 24 hours of our leaving.
