Kids that shoot
« on: May 20, 2011, 08:38:42 AM »
Was reading about the Cougars and made me think about the kids out at my friends mine.

I have a friend that has a big gold mine south of town, out in the bush.  He hires a bunch of guys each summer, and some of them bring along their families.  The kids are turned loose around the cabin area to ply and do what ever they want to do while Dad and sometimes Mom is up the creek operating equipment.  Other Moms will be in the cabin cooking or doing other work, giving minimal supervision to the kids.

My Dad came up for a visit, and to go hunting.  My wife put him on a plane and flew him out to the mine.  I'd pick him up later that day.  Dad saw the kids running around playing and having fun.  He thought this is great for these kids, a good place for them.  Dad went inside to get coffee and sat down with the cook to a piece of pie.  Suddenly a kid about 11 or 12 came running through the door yelling, "I'm going to kill that sXX XX a XXXXX".  Grabbed a rifle that was sitting behind the door, and ducked back out the door.  Dad and the Cook both took off running to the door and on outside.  Just as they reached the door BANG,  there stood the kid with the rifle.

Dad expected to see another kid lying dead or injured, and was in panic.  Dad told me later he broke out in a sweat, and got to shaking all over.  The kid came strutting back to the door saying "I got that SXX OX A XXXXX", and pointed across the creek.  Dad looked across the creek and saw something flopping around over there, about 250 yards away.  Then the smaller kids started shouting "Albert shot a bear, Albert shot a bear".  Dad realized the kid had shot a bear of some type.  The creek was too deep and fast to wade across, so the kid told Dad to start the truck and drive over there.  Dad drove one of the trucks and he and the kid went across the river to make sure it was dead.  The kid jumped out, grabbed a chain and asked Dad to back the truck up to the bear.  When Dad did that the kid hooked the chain to the Pentle Hook on the back of the truck.  Dad drove back to the cabin dragging the bear.  It was a 6 1/2 ft Grizzly.

Never decided what upset Dad the most.  The fact there was a Grizzly that close to the cabin.  The young kid shooting the Bear.  Or the kids language.

Do know Dad was paranoid of bears the rest of his trip.  Good thing we left when we did.  Three Bears were killed at the cabin we were staying in, within 24 hours of our leaving.

Good story Sourdough.
Having dealt with some kids (I volunteer for a group of impoverished kids), I never allow them to use that language until 18 then they can if they choose to. Most don't.
I have never had one try to shoot another, normally they just mouth off and if becomes a pushing match out comes the boxing gloves. An adult only steps in if it's very one sided. Otherwise they keep going until they are sick of it.
I did have one kid try to use a knife. I took it away from him and called his dad. His dad smacked him up and down the lawn. Which was alot more than what the law would have done.
I think adults, men in paticular should be spending time with teens. We need to teach them this thug mentality is the wrong thing. A lot of teens do not have positive male role models and I feel it is very important. Of course that is just plain liberal thinking I know.

The kids actiones showed he had been taught well, by his male roll model.  First he shot the bear with one shot and killed it.  Second he knew he could not cross the creek.  Third he knew what to do to get the bear to the camp.  Few kids would have known to pull a chain from the back of the truck, wrap it around the bears neck tight enough to hold, then attatch it to the pintle hook.  The cussing part showed the absence of a female role model.

You get out in a mining camp where there is no or few women, the talk gets pretty rough amongst the men.  Many of these kids are from single parent homes, no Mom present.

Good story.

This is one of my daughters. She'll prob hunt with me this next season. Her mother hates that, but she will not get a choice in the matter.
Jesus said we should treat other as we'd want to be treated... and he didn't qualify that by their party affiliation, race, or even if they're of diff religion.

Nice looking yungun,  teach her well.  If you are lucky, she will grow up looking like her Mama, but shooting like her Daddy.

The kid doesn't sound like a bad kid at all. I have no complaints, 1 shot is always good. From reading your posts I know you are always dealing with teens etc. Good job.

YellowTail,
Thats how it starts, then they end up taking your favorite guns. WAY TO GO!!!!

Shu:  How right you are there.  When the kids Chipmunk was declared unsafe for the range, I lost my Contender.  After the wife shot my Custom .35 Whelen, I lost it as well.  Oh well, the price we pay to get and keep our families involved.  Goodluck yellowtail3 your time is approching.
