Bogus emails.
« on: May 20, 2011, 12:54:40 PM »
For the past week or so I've been getting emails supposedly from my best friend that died just over a year ago. I know Tank is dead, I was even a pallbearer, About a year ago I got a friend request from another dead friend. I never open them of course but what is the point of these bogus emails?? Personnal data wanted maybe?? Just a cruel joke?? Dunno, but it bugs me. Anybody else going through this?? POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Hey Powder. Was the email's address the same as your friend's old one?

I get them on occasion from a past friend, not dead, but they are usually selling something that the person it is supposedly never heard of. Happened with a couple of differet addresses. Some cookies are designed to collect addresses and I think that is what happened to me. ear

I've had a lot of them but nothing that weird.  I'd be really upset about yours.  I've had packages waiting for me at the post office, some broad in Russia that wanted me to come over and give it to her good - that one full of obscenities.  Just the other day I had a "student" from Africa, claimed her father passed away in New York and left her 5 million bucks, but she needs me to help her collect it.  I think this all started because of ebay.  Africa and Russia are full of internet scammers.  I have been told that reading them is safe, but don't open any links.

Yeah I get them too. I just respond telling them that I forwarded their email to the FBI. Funny, I never hear back from them.  ;D

Even better - many of the scammers want contact info to be able to try to sweet talk you, so give them the phone number of the local / regional FBI fraud office...  ;D  Here is a link to the list of FBI Field Offices:  http://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field/listing_by_state

somehow they got the password for your friends address, and until the password is changed they will continue to use it.  Once they get the password they have access to their mailing address as well.  Some how they got my password and started sending out adds for Viagra, and other similar products, to everyone on my mailing list.  Many of my friends wives were getting irate with me and I did not have a clue what they were talking about.  I went over to a friends and his wife showed me.  I changed my password and it stopped.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I had a place that said if you don't want to get anymore email from us to enter my email addy and they would take me off of their list. Instead they took my addy and used it to send out their spam: viagra, etc. I had to change the addy. Same thing happened at work and is ongoing; can't change that address.

We collect used cell phones for women's shelters. Sometimes the old owner does not clear their information before donating the phone. That is one possible answer. Or someone has your friend's old computer possibly. Anyone skilled in computer forensics can usually hack in. We found a buried hard drive one time. Had been in muddy earth for a month. Our computer forensics unit was able to still find his child porn and he was prosecuted.

A good friend of mine who rebuilds and upgrades old computers has a very powerful electromagnet that he places on old hard drives and plugs it in.  ZAP, the hard drive is rendered useless.  Can't even be re-formatted.  We tore one apart after the electromagnet was finished with it, and some of the magnetic coating on the disc was ripped off and lying in flakes throughout the housing.
Thanks for the stump
