45 ACP Shorty
« on: May 20, 2011, 02:24:06 PM »
Hi All,

It is almost done, least ways done enough to shoot!  Have to refinish the metal, decide what stock set & optics I want and do all the accurizing stuff.  Anyway, it is a Green Mountain 45ACP barrel blank, turned down to fit inside a 20 ga pardner barrel.  D/T for a custom scope rail (cutoff #82 weaver that has been redrilled - maybe a profino? ;D).  The GM barrel is epoxied into the host 20 ga barrel and has a rim on it so it will stay put.  Finished barrel is 18 11/16" I think.

The target below was shot this afternoon in my backyard off the hood of my F150.  Not exactly rested.  The 2 holes at the top are 200 grain LSWC, loaded for my wife's 1911.   The group around the 1" bullseye is 200 grain HP/XTP factory 45 Super from the now defunct Texas Ammo Co.  It chronys 1260 FPS out a 5" 1911, will chrony it out of the Handi later.  The two holes touching where shots 1 & 2.  On the third shot the gun popped open because the "rookie" didn't close it hard enough. :P  Anyway just over 1" @ 50 yards with a pop open so it is showing potential.  Going to finish the gun, do the accurizing stuff and head to range next week and see what I can do at 100 yards.

BB

PS:  Almost forgot, the 45 ACP reamer will be headed to Tim next week to go into the GBO/H&R rental reamer fleet. George (gjdykeman) gave me a good deal on the reamer so I am passing it on to the next guy.

I gotta get me a 45. ;D
Went to the shop today to pick up my new 223 and had him call a couple distributors to check on a 45LC Handi. I know they're discontinued but I was hopin' there was one stashed somewhere... no such luck. >:(
One of the other shops I frequent has a new leftover 45LC Handi but he wants $395 for it. :o :o
Looks like a stub job might be the only game in town these days.
Oh yeah... that's a real nice rifle and looks like it shoots good too. :D

hay Bikerbean, Nice. If Hand R wont make what we want, do it yourself. I have a bunch of brass in 45 case head size, do you think  your shotgun barrel with GM barrel is strong enough to make longer chamber like 45 winny mag.  or even longer.

bikerbeans,

awesome post.  I got one of the gm gunsmith barrels as well.  I might just have to do the same thing you did with it.  I have wanted a 45acp rifle for a while now and you make it seem so easy.  Keep us updated with your progress.

timber,

I think it would be okay to ream it to 45WM as that cartridge is only a couple of tenths of an inch longer.  I wanted it in 45ACP because I load 45ACP on a progressive press for Bullseye competition so I have lots of this ammo laying around.  Also, I can now shoot up all the 45 Super I bought on gunbroker a while back.  If you wanted to hot rod this round you could always load with the 460 Rowland data, but that is a 40K cartridge so it would be best to do that on an SB2 frame.  Mine is a SB1 so I am going to stay at 45 Super (28K) pressures & below.

Matt,

It was easy, I had someone else do all the work. ;D

Pete,

I love to let you shoot this gun because that would mean I made the Grayling shoot.

Doc,

Didn't talk to anybody @ GM, just ordered the blank I wanted.  If you go to their website look at the "gunsmith specials", these are rough blanks and are fairly reasonable in price.

I'm curious as to how well the epoxied in barrel is going to last.  I suppose redoing the epoxy wouldn't be all that hard when the time comes...

GM Barrels has a 44/40 22" blank for 30.00, clearance. 1 in 20 twist. A little slow for 10mm. I was looking for a 41 cal blank, next project.

GB,

My friend who built this gun has made many wildcat CF rifles using this technique.  He has been making them this way for years and to my knowledge has not one loosened up.  The calibers he has chambered with this technique are higher pressure loads than a 45ACP so I have no worries.  Also, the rim of the barrel liner is headspaced on the rimcut in the 20ga barrel so it really can't go anywhere.  I suppose if you could shoot the gun fast enough to get the barrel to 300 degrees F then the epoxy would let loose but I think it barrel would need to be on a gaitling gun to do that. ;D

Andy,

Thanks!  FWIW, my wife & a couple of the dogs think the 45 Super Ammo is pretty loud when I shot it in the backyard. :o

Do you think we would do a conversion like this for me some time down the road?  If so, how much did he charge you?  I'm thinking of scrounging up a shotgun barrel and having it converted to .454 Casull for my Ultra Varmint.

BB, I am waiting for the first ".45 ACP Handi Club" member to post about his deer kill with it. I am sure the .45 Super would do fine and I personally think a stoutly loaded .45 ACP with the correct bullet will work fine within it's range limits. If not a whitetail, then the first game or varmint kill will be interesting to read about....<><....:)

Andy,
While I do not have a handi in ACP, I do have a dandy little Marlin Carbine!  ;) It has accounted for three deer so far!!  I love carring it as its short, light, shoots fast and accurately. I mostly shoot 185Gr +P ammo thru it and its really dropps deer!!

MSP,

I hunt deer mostly in Ohio and the 45 ACP in a rifle is not legal. :(  I can however, put the same ammo in a modified 1911 with an 8 shot magazine and I am legal for deer. ???  Go figure that one.  I will have to be content using the 45ACP to pop whistle pigs in my backyard.

Really cool, I'd been considering doing this with an old 16 ga. I don't use anymore, due to cost of shells.  I have a 20 ga., so it's much more economical.  8)
