Turtle Shell Preservation
« on: May 22, 2011, 12:11:45 PM »
Any suggestions on the best way to clean and preserve the shell of a snapping turtle. I'm sure that all meat scraps have to be removed. Then what, salt, borax, or hang it in the barn for a month or two? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

set it on an anthill and they'll clean it right up.

Why a stinking ol snapper?  Can't you find a nice pretty painted turtle shell to work on?

Its a project that my kid wants to take on. He says that, that snapper had the same disposition as his ole man(Me) I'm feelin the love! His uncle butcherd it today an the kid liked the design on the shell.

Clear varnish brushed on the shell will make it shine and protect it for many years. I have seen a few done like this and they come out real nice.
