Enfield "Ishapore" 2A - 7.62 NATO
« on: May 22, 2011, 04:26:39 PM »
I've always admired the Enfield Mk3 rifles, but didn't want to start shooting another round (.303 British).  I happened to run into someone wanting to sell his Enfield "Ishapore" model 2A at a gun show this weekend.  I couldn't resist.  It's a little rough, but should be a fun plinker.  Now I have four .308's!  It's an addiction.

Recent video on the Enfield Ishapore:

With all the inexpensive surplus Enfields around it might make for some interesting tinkering.  A few ideas I have been pondering are...

Here are .45 ACP  and 7.62x39mm conversions using Enfields...

How about a Enfield rebarreled to shoot .45 Colt?  I believe the rim on a .303 British is very close to a 45 Colt.

I have read there are already .45-70 conversions out there.

I am sorely tempted to go for a 45 acp or 45 Colt conversion for one of my SMLEs but the acp would easily suffice.

I used to have an Ishapore and though it is a Lee Enfield design, it was made in India.  The one I had had been sporterized by an importer with synthetic stock and was accurate but I wanted to scope it and the smith wanted almost as much to drill and tap as I had paid for the rifle.  I sold it and bought a Ruger M77 RSI with 18.5" barrel.  What a beautiful gun!  Too bad I had trouble keeping shots in 4" to 4.5" group at 50 yds.  I should have just paid the smith.  I still get the itch for another 308Win every now and then.
