Yup, archery.

Here's a different bear that also thought about climbing up into the stand with me:
I thought he might go 16.5-17 inches, but I'm awful and guessing these things.

Here he is standing next to the barrel:

And here he is trying to figure out the secrets of the beaver cage:

In the end, I decided to hold out for something better...

Great camera too-
the shots you don't take can be bigger than the ones you take.

Good pictures dukkillr!! Just got home from bearhunting myself.  Semi-annual event, spring and fall.  As area where we go is crawling with grizzlies so they don't allow baiting.  I go up and help a friend on his land with beaver control, working on building site and cabin etc. so we only usually spend 4 hrs. a day hunting, mainly evenings.  In seven days we counted 25 bears this time, 4 browns.  Couple other fellows came up with us this time, one got two average bears one measured 6ft. 6 the other 7ft. 1. very nice hides with no rubs.  The other guy was holding out for a brown as he already had a few blacks under his belt.   Find out in the next month or two how the skulls measured.  Worked out great as I was only wanting the meat so didn"t have to shoot one, I had one come out of the bush 40 ft. from me so will watch for him this fall, would like to take one with the 58.

Just thought of something so had to go check on some skulls.  Biggest bear I shot was in the spring, blonde color measured nose to toe 7ft.6, he weighed around 350 to 400 lbs. his coconut was only a little over 17inches.  Nice black two years ago in the fall had the biggest squash scored at 18 10/16 he was around 400 lbs. and was 6 ft. 11.  Even talking to the taxidermy guys here they say big bears don't always have big skulls.  Little deceiving at times.  Sort of like people I guess big hat size may only be a little more fat between the ears or should I say around:) Skull size is only bragging rights, what I look at is if the hides is nice.  Shot a tiny one with a nice hide on em.  4ft. so he would fit on the grandson's wall. Big bears are nice to get but they take up to much room.  I guess if I was only ever to shoot one or two I would look at it a little differently.

If my only goal had been to shoot a bear with a nice hide I'd have been done in the first couple of hours.  I've got rugs I don't know where to put already, I wanted to hold out for big boar.

Day 2:
Decent boar comes in followed by a bigger looking bear:

The second bear turns out to be a sow with 2 cubs:

The boar runs off the sow and cubs and I decide he's a shooter:

Decent bear, and about what I judged him to be, but not the pig I'm looking for...  Still have 1 tag...

So I had a bear in the freezer and the pressure was off.  Actually one of the things that makes bear hunting so fun is that there really isn't any pressure.  Most every day you'll see bears, and most every bear you see will be in range.  But for me the third day was even less pressure.  I wasn't going to stick a bear unless I was convinced it would go 18 inches, and I probably wouldn't even shoot it then.  I had 4 more days to hunt and I wanted to enjoy them.

Before setting up on day 2 we'd checked several baits, all of which had been hit, and 2 of which had bears at them when we approached.  One had a large pile of bear, uh, poop.  That's where I was headed for Day 3.

Much like the first 2 days, bears started showing up before I even got settled.  Also like the first two days, the first bear to show up was a respectable boar.  Not big, not small.  I was content to watch him.  Then another similar sized bear shows up a couple of minutes later (turn your volume up):

These two carried on for maybe an hour when suddenly their heads both shot up and looked down the path they had come in.  Seconds later they were fleeing the scene in a big hurry.  I figured it had to be a dominate boar so I got the video setup and got ready:

But, as I always seem to do with bears, I couldn't decide if he was a shooter or not.  He was clearly a dominate boar.  He also had a nice white blaze on his chest (visible on the video above), but was he 18"?  Unfortunately he didn't hang around for me to debate... He caught of whiff of me, came over and postured under my stand for a few minutes and left.  Unlike most bears, he wasn't comfortable with me being there.  I figured my shot at him was over.  Absence made my heart grow fonder, or something like that.

The two other black bears wandered back after a few minutes, joined by a smaller black sow.  Then a few minutes later the big bear was back!  He came in cautiously, paused briefly by the bait, and then came over to my stand.  You could tell he still didn't like something and it looked like he was going to take the path leaving the site to my right again, but he paused at 7 yards:

You can hear the death bellow if you turn the volume up.

He went less than 30 yards, although it was so thick I couldn't see him go down.  To give you some idea of how dense it was, I only lost sight of him for maybe 10 yards, and I could hear him die.  Still it took two of us maybe 15 minutes to find him.  You had to nearly step on them in some of that country.

Green scored 18 3/8ths!

I've got a couple more videos then I'm done:

I'm always amazed at how smart these bears are.  Even the sows and cubs make for fantastic entertainment.
