The one's that got away.... :(
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:27:45 AM »
I have to admit I am not like my friend Mikie, he still owns every gun he ever bought.  I have not had the finances to do that.  I enjoy my guns but if one has sat in the gun safe a few years without being used, I tend to send it down the road in favor of a new toy.  I have a good working collection at the moment, not nearly as many as I once had, but these are the single actions that have stuck.

Of the many guns I have owned and sold, the one's I wish I had back are only three.

A blue and case colored American Western Arms .44 spl
A Colt Scout .22 that was a fantastic shooter
A 90% engraved EMF Dakota .45.  It was an awful shooter due to greatly oversize chamber throats.  But I had a spare engraved cylinder in .45 acp with perfect dimentions that could have been rechambered to .45 colt.

What do I still want?  That's easy; A blue 'round butt', short barreled, transfer bar action .45 colt.  I'll have to work on that one!   44 Man

;) Nice collection of sa... I wish I would have kept track of all the guns I have owned and sold...I can think of only a couple I wish I had not parted with..a few rifles, but only two revolvers come to mind...one was a 9 1/2 in Ruger .22/22mag...had it for YEARS...sold it to make some extra cash to make a trip some where...could get another, but that one had lots of memories attached...the other was a 4'' model 29 that one of the now famous master gun engravers did for me before he became famous...the same work by that fellow is now $3500. for an equal amount of engraving... :-[ :-\

44 Man,

Like you, I could never afford to keep all the guns I've owned through the years. A couple I regret losing are my NIB 3rd generation Colt SA in .45 Colt. Purchased in the late 70's for $475.00, at a local TG&Y of all places, with money borrowed from my brother. I was raising a young family at the time and couldn't justify keeping badly needed funds tied up in a pistol I seldom was able to shoot. Sold it in the mid-80's for $600.00 and thought I did well.  :(

I had a Colt New Frontier .22 lr, purchased new in the early 70's that was dearly loved. Someone stole it out of my car in the mid-80's. These guns are now way too expensive on the second hand market for me to replace it.

One I wish I could have bought was a 2nd generation Colt SA, in .45 Colt , with stag grips, that I spied at a gun show in the mid-60's. Priced at $90.00, I had the funds but was too young to legally purchase it on my own. The adult that accompanied me to the show didn't like the dealer and vowed to find a similar deal elsewhere. Alas, it never happened.

But even with these losses, I now own more firearms than I ever dreamed possible "back in the day". Ours is a fun hobby and, to my way of thinking at least, selling and trading are part of the excitement.

only single action i can think of that id like to have back is a stainless super 7.5 inch that was made the first year they did them stainless. It shot like a rifle. I dont care for the dragon grip frame and thats why it went down the road. I wish i had it  back to put a bisley grip frame on. Couple DA guns that make me cry even more are my 696 smith and my 3 inch 610 smith. Now those two guns should have never left the house.

Would that be the Pacmayer presentation grip on the scoped piece? Been eyeballing these for my super which currently has a Hogue which is kind of bulky, kind of ill fitting, but still a good platform to send a bullet down range.

The scoped handgun is a Mag-na-port Stalker done up on a Freedom Arms .44 mag.  Yes those are Pachmyers and I like them for hunting.  In cold weather I will not freeze my hands hanging on the the gun waiting for a deer to come by.

My current single actions are...... from twelve o'clock..

My second generation Colt .45 (which was a 7 1/2" and pretty rough when I got it)
A Gaucho .45 (an excellent shooter I would not part with)
Bounty Hunter .22/.22 mag. (another belt gun that will not leave me)
Hy Hunter .22, the latest project gun.
The Mag-na-port Stalker FA
A very 'finish worn' Hy Hunter in .44 mag.
And another Mag-na-port custom which started life as a Ruger Super Blackhawk.

Sounds just like a reworked Ruger New Vaquero 8). They are great "Packing Pistols" accurate, easy to carry, SAFE WITH 6, & have Ruger reliability.

You are right about the Vaquero! I just finished a 4 5/8 in a stainless .45 (with the help of some of you), and it will stay. Accurate, light and quick handling. As soon as the curly maple in my shop gets cut to fit it will spend a lot of time in the woods.
