« on: May 24, 2011, 04:56:49 AM »
Did a quick search and didn't find what I wanted.  Anybody got some up to date info on Trail Boss in the Maxi?  Thinking about 158 and 180gr loads.  Goatwhiskers

Goat, I was about to send you the same link, but garbhead beat me to it.  Believe me, it works.  It makes a nice powderpuff load.

Last year I kept reading posts about 45 cal Handis and finally I gave in and bought 1 2 3 4.  Then it was all the posts about the 357 Maxi, got one of them too.  Now you guys keep singing the praises of TB Powder.  Guess I need to a buy can of this stuff so I can see what all the hoopla is about. ;)

You can't go wrong with the Trailboss powder.

It's a great powder and a safe one, and if you go by the formula in the link you will be safe with any cartridge and on the mild side.

You can load just about up to the bullet and still have safe pressures as long as you don't compress the powder.

Now when I load up light loads for plinking I won't use anything else but Trailboss.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I havent used it in a handgun yet, but it works great in the 243 and 25-06. Makes both of them shoot like a 22mag. Its definitly one to keep around for younguns or just plinking fun.

There is all this talk about it being a 'powderpuff' load with TB, but it will duplicate Black Powder ballistics, which aint too shabby!

Trail Boss is good stuff. I use it in my 500 and I loaded some 44 mags with it for my nephew.
Shoot some through the chrony, you might be surprised at the velocity. ;)

IIRC it takes a 45-70 bullet about 3.5 sec. to go 1000yds.; thats time to take a sip of coffee or a puff on a cee-gar.
Works for me...... ;)

Reloading is probably one of the best examples of the things people do and the lengths they will go to making something into something it is not.  Amazing creativity however.  Larry

I kinda like having a fun, plinking load and a high end load for several calibers. At one time I had a 'mid-level load' too, and way too many powders. For a long time now Ive simplified things by have cast bullet loads, which for me by definition is, reduced level (and way cheaper than buying jacketed). The few high enders/jacketed dont really get much use.
BTW, Im liking TB so much I just bought a 5# jug and saved about $3/lb. I will still use the RedDot/700X/Bullseye class loads in smaller capacity cases (had a good one in .22Hornet/cast), but I want that loading density in the bigger ones.

Later this summer, Patty and I are going to be shooting for two straight days in Tee shirts.  She was concerned about developing a flinch with her .270, so I made 10 .270 TB loads and she loved them, so I rolled a big batch for her to take to the shoot.  I'll be shooting Handis in Maxi, .38-55 and .445 SM, all on BC Carbine stocks with the metal butt plates, plus the .45-70.  Not wanting to come home black and  blue and purple too, I made up 20 38-55s with 10 gr. TB under a 240 gr. LFN.  I only shot one to feel the recoil and it was mild.  I didn't chrony it or try to put it on paper because it is pouring rain....supposed to clear by Tuesday.....a great holiday weekend.

I think Trail Boss has a definite place in extended shooting sessions, small game and small varmint hunting.  Also for starting young kids shooting.

I shoot TB under a 145 gr collar button in my 45-70 for rabbits. It's not that odd that I have this load, I can carry one gun capable of rabbits, deer, or bear (whish are all in season at the same time here).
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

This morning I loaded about 150 240 gr. .38-55s over 14.0 gr. Trail Boss for 1119 fps.  Accurate and very comfortable to shoot.  I also loaded about 250 160 gr. .38 Spec. over 3.9 gr. Tite Group.  Another fun and easy load.  Patty and I attend a 2 day benefit shoot each summer in Lower Michigan for Muscular Distrophy, so I'm stocking up.
