Author Topic: Found an Optimum Charge Weight Load for 22-250 (Read 534 times)

I was doing some heavy load testing for the 22-250 and stumbled on to a super accurate load for the 22-250. I had found two very good loads with IMR 4895 and H380 when I happened to try IMR 4064 and it just shot amazing. I ended up at 36 grains behind a 50grain Hornady V Max with winchester brass and winchester large rifle primers. Ended up setting the bullet back .030 from lands and when all these factors combined the accuracy was beyond what I expected. Chrono numbers was 3873 average at 15 feet from a 26" barrel. Work up slowly as I got no pressure signs but this is a max load none the less. Also shot very respectful with 38.5 grains of H380 and federal 215M magnum primers same brass and 34 grains of IMR 4895 with the winchester primers same brass. Final six groups with the IMR 4064 averaged .244 or slightly less than 1/4",with a best group of .151. If you are playing with a 22-250 you might try working up to this load and see what it does in your gun, very consistant for me.

Been using that load for years. It's a winner.

Also VERY accurate if you want something milder to save your barrel is 28 grs. of H322 with either any 50-55 gr. bullet.

I use 41.0 grs H-414 with the 50 gr v-max molycoated at .005 from the lands. they shoot .2's for me with the best being .131. I've tried most everything and H-414 wins hands down.

Only thing I don't like about the ball powders Dave is that in the summer heat when I do most varmint hunting up here the pressures can go up and down a little too much for me depending on temp. Sounds like you have a good load and tight groups, what kind of rifle are you using? are you using a magnum primer with the H414?

Well Ed.....seems I've stumbled on to your favorite load and its a good one. I can't ask for more and get really good velocity also. Now that I'm dialed in I don't shoot the gun at that much target and with our varmint population it will take quite a few years to shoot the barrel out at the rate I'm going. Still nice to look out the back window into the field and know that any chuck or coyote that I see is in real trouble even back at the 275yd woods line :eek:

Woodseye,

The rifle is an early Rem. 788 restocked and trigger converted to adjustible, glass bedded. To shoot .005 from the lands makes it a single shot but not of any importance to me.

I used this load in 95deg. heat in Wyo with no problems, but every gun is a rule unto itself after all.
