Who makes Jap Winchesters?

I've read in old threads here that the Winchester 92 is made in Miroku Japan. Does anybody know what the name of the company is in Miroku?

There are no "jap" winchesters, there are Winchester's assembled in the Miroku plant in Miroku Japan, which I believe is a subsidiary of FN Herstal, the holding company the copyright and manufacturing rights to Winchester and Browning is currently leased to..
 Miroku in the past has also built rifles for Smith and Wesson and Weatherby.

Not to mention Browning BLR's.  Not one for being "politically correct",  I still do not like or use terms that are negative to a group of people.  However, if some one is a jerk or an ass, I have no problem telling them they are.  My dad was one of the first group of heavy equipment engineers to enter Japan after the war ended and used the term "Jap", a different time and a different mentality.  DP

I have had to put all 3 of the posters who replied on ignore for hijacking this thread and attacking an abbreviation Ive used for over 50 years. I asked about a lever action rifle not about politicol correctness.  Please restrict comments to firearms or do not reply at all. Thankyou.

How does the peanut gallery feel about the term "Japchesters"? A consolidation of 2 words in the German tradition.  It always brings a smile to my face when I hear it.  :)

Because the  terms, japchester,made in japan, sets it apart from the term Winchester, Made in the New Haven plant, USA. For example, " I have a '95 Winchester for sale" Oh yea, which one"? As opposed to," I have a '95 Japchester for sale". No need to comunicate any further, question is null and void.
 I'm not commenting on the South Carolina made rifles as of yet. One more thing, "lighten up a little guys" :-*

Nosir - the Miroku Gun Company makes entire guns, to Winchester's (and their lawyer's) specs - complete with safeties that were not designed into the New Haven models - and stamped "Made in Japan".


Call me a purist, but Original Winchester's were ALL marked: "Made in New Haven"  (until the recent  resurrection in the Carolinas), with various/sundry foreign-made clones marked appropriately with their origins.

FWIW, the Miroku-made guns, albeit marked "Browning" or "Winchester" are excellent examples of the gunmakers craft, with a very high level of fit/finish - MUCH better than what came out of New Haven after 1964 (except for the Custom Shop, of course)

It's been said ; Japanese firearms are very well made.

I hate the safety junk Winchester/Browning has. But the BL22 a friend has is of very high quality and I like it.

I've seen newer M1886 Winchesters and they had tang safeties.

How old is your 71?

I have owned my 1st ever cowboy gun and 3 days later I have removed the rebounding hammer feature.

If anybody hates their rebounding hammer please pm me. I can help you in 5 minutes. Rebounding hammers only disway beginners and blatant novices.

I learned this within the last week since buying my jap winchester. Miroku is a metal machining co in Kochi japan They started by making pnuematic harpoon whale guns in the 19th century. They are a top notch gun company comparable with any gun mfg co on earth. No John Wayne didn't film any Westerns in Japan.

I've shot my new japchester twice this week for about 50 rounds. If it were a new haven winny I would never fire it. I would put it on my church's alter to be seen only upon appointment by the head pastor but I don't have enough money to buy a new haven winnie but Miroku makes that something I don't mind.

Not sure of the dates, late 90's early 2000's, but the Browning marked 71's and I believe the Browning marked 86 don't have safeties.  They are not marked Winchester.

FWIW, The Miroku-made leverguns, PRIOR to Browning & Winchester being lawyered by the same tight-cheeked folks, were made sans the safeties JB never thought they needed when he designed them - were all Browning-marked Model(s):
 M-53 (1990)
 M-65 (1989)
 M-71 (1986-87)
 B-78 (1973-82)
 B-92 (1978-86)
 B-1885 (1985 - 2001)
 M-1886 (1986 & 1992-93)
 M-1895 (1984).

The Miroku-made leverguns made after the lawyers got them, AFAIK are all Winchecter-marked Model(s):
 M-71 (currently)
 M-1885 (1999 - currently)
 M-1886/86 (1999-2001 & currently)
 M-1892/92 ( 1997-2000 & currently
 M-1895/95 (1997 - currently)

Yep +1.  I always use the word Jap.  It's short for Japanese.  Nothing hateful about it IMO.
