What do you think?
« on: May 25, 2011, 07:58:16 AM »
Gents, I have an opportunity for a Pedersoli 'Gemmer' Sharps, 45-70, LN but no box, and I have shot it (maybe the first to do so) with the open sights as delivered; it be a shooter!
Does anyone know what this may have retailed at when made 15ish years ago?
Any comments regarding this model in specific and what a 'fair' price ( a 'steal' not required) would be?
Thanx!

Plain Jane, 45-70, hunting model, with basic sights today, NIB $900 (ish) to over $1,200 depending on where you buy, and options added.  As for 15 yrs ago, I can't say 5 yrs ago about the same.

I bought one 10 years ago  new for $750 dollars. It is rechambered  to 45-110. I had a paper patch chamber cut in it. This has been my big game rifle for many years. The "Gemmer" is a Sharps that looks like a Hawken rifle complete with a under barrel ram rod or cleaning rod in this case. Gemmer was having a problem back in the day getting western hunters to give up their muzzle loaders for his breech loadeing Sharps. He made the Sharps with a short heavy barrel with a buck horn rear sight and a silver blade front sight. The 45-70 brass often failed and stuck in the chamber so he added the HAWKEN style under barrel ram rod to remove stuck brass. I have seen asking prices for these rifles in new condition run $1,600. I think they were a special run for Cape Outfitters a Mo. firm that sold DPS firearms.

That sounds like the one, SW, sure not a plain sporting rifle by any means, and dbl set triggers too. I was thinking about $850 wouldnt be bad, it is still an Italian repro with the typical fit & finish issues and 'iffy' metallurgy from back then. I have read reports of Rockwell tests done on even a Uberti, acknowledged by many as the best of Italian makers, indicating their 'Highwall' was only just past soft (1018 IIRC) with a case harden. A tribute to the design more than the metal, though even at this it may be better than the old originals, after all, we have come a long way in making consistent alloys over the 'dark ages' of 100+ years ago.
I know where a couple of Win. '85's are for under that $1600 and would much rather spend that much on a true vintage piece of that class than an Italian repro.
