Folks I saw a Winchester marked version of the 1885 Browning Traditional Hunter in .405 Win. today. I had not heard anything about a .405.

Ed,

See my posting on Winchester Ltd. Editions on Dec. 19th.  The next rifle in the series which Winchester had in the works was the .405 caliber.  It's out now and being distributed by Davidson's.  All of Davidson's stock has been allocated so I'm betting the same dealer has some.  The details are:

Additional Features 1: Octagonal Barrel
Retail Price: $1,320.31

Ed,

Although the suggested retail price is $1,320, I have not checked but I'd bet Legendary Guns Inc, Phoenix, AZ (602-242-1195) is selling them for the same price as the other calibers, which was $1,195 each. Give them a call if you are interested.  If you get one I like to see your feedback posted on this forum.

Hello Wayne,
Your description of the . 405 is an exact match. Both of the Browning features,  the gold trigger and the "Buck" on the lever, were gone. Good riddance to both.
The forend on the one I saw was a slightly green tinted around some sap wood.  Both pieces of wood had some well hidden but extensive sap wood. I have no idea why they try to pass off wood like that on a rifle of this type.
The top flat of the barrel just ahead of the receiver and the top of the receiver ring were both marked with the "WP in an Oval" Winchester proof mark.

Greetings all.  I just discovered this forum the other day and am making my way through all of the old posts to get myself up to speed.  I don't know who will see this reply, since the thread is so old, but I though I would make my debut here.
I just bought one of these new 1885s in .405 Winchesters a few weeks ago.  Mine is a beautiful rifle, but, with that crescent buttplate, it kicks like the very devil.  Even wearing a PAST recoil shield, I came away badly bruised.  I've locateda new shotgun style butt for it and am now trying to find someone who can fit and finish it for me - and put on a Kick-Eez recoil pad.   I think it will look great when finished.
