Slugs for Mossberg 500
« on: May 25, 2011, 01:25:31 PM »
Im gonna mount a scope on my Mossberg. 12 guage, 24" rifled barrel, cantilever scope mount. I load CBC brass shells in my 410, and am going to use them in my 12 as well. My question: Im looking for an accurate slug load in my 12 guage. I dont have any experience in loading slug loads. I would prefer a full size heavy as can be all lead slug, 100 yard MAX range, much more likely to be 50 yards. Anybody got any experience theyd like to share to help me get started? Thanks, Matt.

Man, I have the same gun, but don't want to go to the lengths you do . I shoot factory for convenience but admire your ambition. The 2 3/4 shot better with less recoil than the 3" for me.I have a hastings polygonal that shoots well. The M500 is very versatile and lefty friendly.

Get you a Lee Shotgun slug mold for around $20.00.  They come in 7/8 oz or 1 oz in 12 GA. It molds a slug that has a drive key that positively rotates the slug in a rifled barrel. You load the slug in a WW plastic wad and use the standard star crimp like any other shot shell. Cast your slugs out of as soft lead that you can find.

And then there was this guy on you-tube that made slugs for a smooth bore shotgun by drilling a proper diameter hole in a piece of wood about 3/4" thick and used it as a mold. He laid it down and poured melted lead in and let it cool then punch it out with a stick and placed the slug in a plastic wad and used Unique powder I think and loaded it with one of the old Lee hammer job tools and it shot pretty accurately out to about 50 yards I think. Do a search on you-tube you might be able to find it.
