BUGEYE,
It was more than likely the Charleston Grey! I love the Charleston Grey.  It's long and fat with a tender rind. I't too big for the fridge, but perfect for a large cooler. It's an old variety and more susceptible to disease but I still plant them when I can keep the deer off of them.  They will bust the ends with their hooves and eat the end out rind and all.

Bought another melon, from walmart this time. Like the kroger one, it was not good, not even ripe. Those seedless is all I've seen this year around here. POWDERMAN.  >:( >:(

It's still early for watermelons here in SC. Only about one to two weeks to go though. The middle or end of June is the peak here. Most you see are grown in Florida if you buy them now.  They are not local. The last week or two is when they start making sugar. How ripe the melon was picked often determines this. A good rule of thumb is the underside should be turning yellow and the pigtail from the vine should be brown and shriveled.  Those in the stores are picked too early for me. I have seen cantelopes local, but I can't stand them.

Dadgumit squirrellluck!
Now you done gone and made me homesick!
In Ruston there used to be a Summerall`s(sp?) peach orchard. my daddy and one of the Summerall sons worked for the same gas measurement instrument company. During peach harvest time we would be invited to help at the orchard to prepare peaches for packing and shipping. naturally we got alot of free peaches and most of them were Alberta`s!
Now it was about an hour drive back in those days back to Shreveport where we lived. Me and my two brothers would set in the back in the bed of the pickup and eat peaches all the way back to Shreveport. Needless to say you knew what was going to happen the next morning!!
The same results as eating to much watermelon! Real colon blasters!!

In the early 60s I worked for the farms in the season, back then there were two seasons orange  and watermelon. Us school kids would load melons after school and on weekends for the grand sum of 66&2/3 cents an hour. This was very hard and hot work, working inside a smitrailer or RR car for up to 10 hours a day on the weekend. A pair of Levis cost a little over $10 so that was a dayand a half of work for a pair. If I never see another melon it will be to soon.

30-30man, you're probably right, this was from the late 40s.  I STILL remember that taste after all these years.   and yes, making fruit and vegs. easier to cultivate doesn't do anything for the flavor.
