Extended barrels
« on: May 26, 2011, 03:42:36 AM »
A lot of us want 16inch barrels to use with our stocked actions, but other than .17 or .223, are very difficult to find.  I gave up looking and had four barrels extended by Advanced Gunsmithing. They are permanent and legal. Your existing s14 forends still fit and your sights/scopes remain. The front sight can be mounted on the extension for a little more cost. Fit and finish are flawless. They were about $80 to have this done [this may change?].

You might want to provide a link, or other contact info, "Advanced Gunsmithing" comes up with a lot of other stuff in search engines.
Are these smooth bore extensions?
Do you notice less noise and muzzle blast?

Ive often thought about a longer bbl on my super-14 so it would be legal using a butstock..  Just never got around to doing anything about it.

Your pictures show quality barrel work.  Like Stoky want to know if the extension was smoot & over bore or  rifled?  Seems like a logistics problem matching up the rifling.  Anyhow, what advantages do you see in this extension as compared to a welded muzzle brake?

Advanced Gunsmithing really doesn't have a web site. Best way is to call Jack at 530 277 6877. He is near Grass Valley, CA.  I must admit I just got these back Tuesday and haven't fired any. The extension is not rifled, about .020 larger than the bore. They are nicely crowned. All four barrels the dividing line is almost invisible. Jack tells me to do this the extension has to be individually fitted as T/C bull barrels are NOT all the same size. Advantages over a welded muzzle brake? Looks mostly.  I will be shooting these in the next few days and will report.

P.S.: Jack's blue jobs are absolutely as good as any I have ever seen on anything.

If they shoot as good as they look your good to go.  8)
It seems like the advantage over a welded brake might be less muzzle blast, as opposed to more.

Have you shot these yet? If so, how did they do?

Not yet, NorCal is having a global warming event that is extending winter past June. Snowing above 5000, the shootin pond is at 5800. The Bronco can get there, but its a soggy mess. I will wait and report as soon as I shootem.

I shot all four barrels today[6/15].  I could go into lengthy comparisons of grouping and drop, but I wont. Briefly, they seem to shoot the same as before the extensions. I must note that after about 10 shots the 30-30 extension came off. I dont know when it came off and could not find it. I didnt hear or feel it when it went downrange, odd. I am quite sure I will be provided a refitted replacement. My feeble guess is the reblue process may have loosen it. I am pleased with all of them [44mag, 327max, 223, 30-30] and find this barrel modification much easier [cheaper] than a carbine barrel.

I will report on what is up with the 30-30.

P.A.

Thats interesting...not many folks can say they sent a bullet and 2" of barrel down range.  I sorta figured they would be threaded on and somebody forgot the lock-tite.

Anyhow, keep us posted on this.

Maintaining pre-extension accuracy is expected...probably a slight reduction in muzzle blast...but perhaps not enough to tell.

If they are threaded on, even with loc-tite, my bet is they wouldn't pass BTAF's test.
they need to be welded or brazed on: not made to be removed.

The extensions are silver soldered on. Similar to brazing. The process is pretty hi-tempurature but I think the bluing process may have weakened it. The others are fine including some wicked 375grain 44mags. Will report.

If they were silver soldiered, I don't think the bluing job could have done a thing to them, sometimes the silver solider doesn't get applied at the correct temp and doesn't stick (I'm sure they try to keep the heat down on your barrels), or one or both  surfaces wasn't prepped correctly .  I have used silver soldier, and I sell spot welding electrodes and they silver soldiered copper tungsten faces to copper electrodes, I have seen these copper tungsten faces take so much heat that they glow red and the silver solider holds weld after weld after weld.  I'm sure they will make good for you tho.

I was thinking the same thing.  Either poor surface prep or wrong heat.  Your smith would have sweat soldered the extensions on like copper plumbing.  If done correctly there is nothing stronger, and no bluing job in the world would affect the joint.  sounds like a cold joint.

Just think, the moment the extension came off you 'became illegal'! [if you were using a rifle/carbine stock setup].
I've thought a lot about extensions for 14" barrels, and just sold them to fund rifle/carbine barrels 16" and longer. Got 3 23" barrels right now!
