Injured Basenji
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:55:36 PM »
My daughter's Basenji was struck by a car and came away from the ordeal with a broken toes and a section of his leg that was degloved. Basically a ring around his leg is stripped of skin down to the bone. Other than a very costly skin graft, her vet told her to keep the wound wrapped and use plenty of antibiotic ointment on the wound, changing the dressing twice a day.
Has anyone ever dealt with this type of injury? Did she receive good advice?
Thanks.

GH1,

Go to the feed store and buy a bottle of "cut & heal" it's a liquid and smells like turpentine. It's promotes healing and actually will draw the shin together if the area is not to big. Apply 2-4 times a day to the shinned area.

In another life we hunted hogs with dogs and when they got cut up thats what we used. Worked on my horses in new mexico as well.

sounds like the right course of action.  I've removed plenty of my own skin.  Also if you can find it and find it in large enough pieces you can use a product called second skin it is steril and will cover the wound for days at a time and promotes skin growth.    Good luck
