What air rifle to get? Benjamin 392 or Benjamin trail?
« on: May 28, 2011, 12:52:02 PM »
I'm looking for a new air rifle.  I've had a Benjamin 392 for almost 20 years.  It flooded a few years back and is in bad shape.  I got it going the other day.  It's rusted and has a soldered together bolt because I broke it trying to free it up.  I am looking at getting the same rifle or possibly a new nitro piston break barrel.  The 392 has always served me well.  It was a hard gun to use with a scope but it has killed countless squirrels and coons.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Hay stumpy, what caliber is your Benjamin? Is it the pump up model?

Thanks,

Pastorp,

The  392 is a .22 caliber pump up.  Its modeled after the traditional benjamins.  They are great guns overall.

I hesitate to weigh in since although I own a 392 it is my first air rifle since I was a kid (four decades ago).  However I will say two things.  1. When I went looking for an air rifle last year I was looking for something "old school", a pumper that I could vary the power, a 22 that would give good knock down without warp speed, one that wouldn't break the bank and something dependable that would last for years.  From my experience and the comments I've read on various boards, I think I made a good choice.  2. I can already tell that she shoots better than I can with open sights.  I'm thinking about scoping her just to see what she can really do.  So far I really like this air gun.

Curtis,

I'm leaning a little more towards another 392.  My 392 has always served me well.  It is just in really bad shape.  It still functions but the connecting rod on the pump is almost rusted apart.  The Benjamin trail only has slightly higher velocities.  The trail is supposed to be quieter but I don't find the 392 that loud.  Also, the 392 is about 60 dollars cheaper.

I did some digging over the last few days and found the Benjamin 392 to be rated at 109 decibels and the Trail at 66 Decibels.

Re: Scoping a Benjamin pump

I have a 397 with a pistol scope mounted in a scout position so its not in the way when I pump it.

Hey STUMPJUMPR, I had a Sheridan bluestreak, same as your Benjamin 392 except it was a 20 caliber. It also was a steel barrel your 392 has the rifled brass barrel. That bluestreak was a real good gun, cept it got hard to pump much beyond 6-8 pumps, but it sure was a hard shooter! Mine was the older model, not the real old one, but alot nicer than the cheaper lookin one they have now. Let us know what you get? Thanks! scout4<><

I ended up picking up a 392 from academy today.  I liked my old one so I got a new one.  The new one isn't as well made and the trigger isn't as good.  It seems to still be a decent gun just not as good as they were.
