CHANGE OF DIRECTION
« on: May 30, 2011, 07:02:50 AM »
I have decided that this project gun will be in .38super/9x23---we will get into some details later.
What model S&W do you boys suggest for this conversion ?
Who?
I want to stick to a 4 inch barrel---but that can be cut sown if I find the right project gun.
May get it engraved by Smith-- :P 8) :)
Would like an unfluted cylinder---is this a doable alteration ?
More stupid ideas will follow---I am sure.
Blessings

That is what I am working on now.
Whatever it is, I will probably have to buy one.
I want to find out what the Smith that will do the work reccommends. I would like it to be an "N" frame---"L"  would work also, mabe a M356.
Got a suggestion?

An N Frame would be sweet! I am still trying to think of a good base model for the .38 Super. Isn't that a base .355" diameter slug?

William there ya go thinking out of the box and the norm again.

I'm sorry but i like the S&W "N" Frames while there on the large size they just feel right in my hands.  They also feel right on the balance too.  Wouldn't the S&W model 27 or 28 N frame be your base to start from?

But now may i ask why in 38super or 9x23 win??  I would think you or us here who go whole hog and go for the gusto and get the 9 x 25 dillion?

Do able or not i think anything can be made with a good lathe or cnc machining center will turn out the cylinder very fast once its programed.  The cylinder and ejector will need to be designed also with a barrel too.

Or can the orginal 357 cylinder be sleeved and the extractor changed and then its the barrel to be delt with.  I don't know the dimentions on it all yet.

I like the .38 super which can easily match the .357 and the 9x23 which can come real close to the .41mag.
They are easy shooters and I can reload for them if I choose + I have about a thousand ronds of each on hand.
In actuality and all honesty there is no legit reason except I think it would be neat, cool and otherwise fun. It is just a project to make life not so mundane.
I really don't know much about the 9x25 except it pushes the 10mm pretty good for performance.
I am going to venture--just from reading--that a 586 or a 28 will be the choice. I am thinking the 586 is my choice for now---they are fairly easy to find, matter of fact i have one--but I may try and find one that is not so well kept. it is going to be smithed to begin with and the blueing will certainly have to be redone.
There is also the outside chance that I might send it to S&W for some art work and reblueing.
I am going to call S&W tomorrow to see if they will do all of the work---if so, then it might be a new one----but I really doubt it. I know where I can get a near pristine 586 right now for $600.
See this is part of the fun--figgering out a project and making it work.

A .357/.38 & 9mm are just about a 1000th apart. I shoot 9mm slugs in my .38super reloads and have no problem.

I called James Willis, he has the 586 to reblue it and asked him to call the boy on Shootout Ln in Shreveport to see if they would do the conversion---then james can blue it up.

Wow! Wm, you really can come up with some neat ideas to occupy your time!
Watch those boys in Shreveport! ;) Just kidding! That is where I used to call home until my mother passed away there last year.
Anyway keep us posted on this new venture of yours!!

Once again, Clark Custom will not do the conversion. I am going to take Clark off the list.
I am going to get in contact with Pinnacle Gunsmithing---they say they can do this.
