I have a Rem  870 home defense shotgun with an unthreaded barrel. How hard would it be to cut threads in it by hand?

Just wondering, what would a person thread onto an 870 barrel to make it more suitable for home defense? I have threaded some for the police dept. to take door breaching tools, but can't imagine what else someone would want to attach to their barrel?

Sorry I failed to mention that I would like to thread it for chokes since it is not. I  use  it for predator hunting as well and a door breacher would be cool also. ;D

It's not a terribly difficult procedure but tooling is very expensive and one needs to know the possible pitfalls.. I would advise a trip to a qualified smith. It's usually a wise decision in this process. Don't know if they're still available but there used to be available a choke devise that allowed one to make an oval pattern and direct it in either a verticle oval or a horizontal one. Many of these also caontain ports to help with recoil control that can make a difference in a tactical situation.. Check the Brownells website for availability of such devises.. If unsure kust call the teck support guys.. a really great service.

Aah, thread the inside! That makes way more sense. It's doable at home, the tooling I use is driven by a brace and could be used at home. (Tru-Choke style)  But by the time you buy the tooling you could have had a LOT of barrels threaded.
