You had me shakin' in my boots...
« on: May 31, 2011, 09:30:45 AM »
I even priced orthopedic shoulder braces and practiced writing wrong handed.

So I took my 45-70 to the range finally.  Girded my loins.  Slinged it correctly and firmly against my shoulder for an off hand shot first.  Breathed deeply and relaxed.  Focused... I pulled the trigger... Huh...?

Maybe it was a dud... no, the case ejected empty, the bore was clear and there was a hole in the target. So I loaded another.  Relaxed, pulled the trigger.  Another hole right next to the first.  And then a third right next to the first two.  And then...

+ THE LIGHT +

It's so clear...  I understand now <45-70>  YES.!!!

Well, I admit it was Rem. factory 405 ammo.  I did have a recoil pad and had filled the stock with lead shot.  But I'd planned on more 'effect'.  On having to save this gun for those times when I had gathered my courage and prayed unceasingly.

Yes it jumped, yes it pushed my shoulder back.  And it made a very satisfying boom...  and nice big holes in the paper, all close together.

So I shot up two and a half boxes just for the fun of it.  This gun likes factory 405s.  It likes Marlin level loaded 405s.  It does NOT like HHP 300s.

It's FUN.

Thanks all, especially fellow Texan 'frgerald' for selling it to me... Be Well...

Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

Most of the factory 45-70 loads aren't bad at all.  Even the Hornady levereveluotion aren't bad.

It's just like many of the Handi calibers that are rimmed and have straight walls.

Not that it has anything to do with it, but they do seem to be mighty accurate when you shoot them from a Handi rifle.

The great thing about the 45-70 is that it is so versatile and doesn't have to be feared.    Yes, you can load it where it will kill on both ends of the barrel, but you can also load it with loads that make it an accurate puddy tat!

Find the load that you like, and it will be your constant companion when you head for the woods, or the range.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

A wise author here once wrote here, "Recoil is in the shoulder of the beholder".  Truer words haven't yet been spoken...

There is good reason the 45/70 has lasted SOOOOO LOOOONG!!  Welcome to the light!

Always keep a few really HOT loads when you go to  the range.  If someone wants to shoot it, make it live up to it's reputation ;D  They will  think you're the toughest man in town.

I actually found the Handi in 30-06 to have a much more unpleasant recoil than my 45-70.

Glad you have a shooter.  If you get lucky and can line up  4 or 5 deer at once, you can save ammo!

for a glimpse of some of the recoil potential, load up a few with real black powder.  You'll gladly go back to the warm smokeless rounds.  ;)

After years of playin' with light weight small diameter rounds, I discovered the 45-70 and have never felt under gunned.   :)

Enjoy

Mechanic,  I can't vouch for the 45-70, but I know you speak the truth about the '06 Handi!  It makes its presence known.  Whenever someone sees me shoot it they always say, "What the *@!! are you shooting?"  and comment on the flames from the end of the barrel!

But it shoots so good that not only do I have a reputation for one shot kills, (all gun mind you) I got several friends hooked!

Something else I've found with the Remington factory 405sp, is that it is very accurate! ;)

I had a very similar reaction when I tried my first 45-70 Handi. I used the same factory load as you and could hardly believe it was firing. To be perfectly honest, I had my friend shoot it first, I wanted to see his reaction instead of him seeing mine. If I had only known.... ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I'm a fan of the Hdy RN Interlock at about 2100 fps.  Others have had good luck with this bullet, but not necessarily this velocity from their handis as well.  If I can concentrate enough to do it, it's sub MOA at 100.  Most of the time it's more like 1.25-1.5 MOA.  200 yards is about as far as that reaches, and unless you're shooting off the bench, the recoil really won't kill you.  My bench-shooting limit is around 10 rounds or so.

my "45-120 cannon" weighs 11 pounds & I would not shoot a 2,550 FPS 405 Rem SPs. :o  I think Tyler's gun has a recoil reducer in it but he is still shooting a BC stock set and that curved steel buttplate will separate the men from the boys.

No need to go heavy on the loads. Even the light trapdoor loads will give you complete pass through on deer sized critters.

I'm a little guy, so I won't be goin' to 45-120.  I'll be reloading soon as my dies get here.  Also the gun's getting refit stock and possibly another scope.  Seems these large calibers are my best Handi shooters, must be fate, so I be nice to them.

Thanks all...

I'm not sure how well they group, but I also loaded up some 350 grain cast flat points today with a low charge (above min) of Reloader 10x.  I don't have a group printed, but I plinked at some cans and the like for a while and enjoyed the gentle push of the light rounds.  The interlocks tend to rock me a bit.  They also shoot flatter, though.  The 350 cast bullets will likely be relegated to plinking, coyotes, deer, etc.  The 350 Interlocks will be my elk bullets.  The lighter load will probably penetrate just fine, but the extra velocity sure makes them shoot flatter.

Try some cast 405's too.  They will also rock ya a bit, but will penetrate very well.  Had some hard cast 405's shoot through a nice whitetail buck, length wise!  As in I miss judged the lead, pulled the trigger, deer "belly flopped".  Entry hole was near side ham, smashed pelvis, destroyed several vertebrae, exited just in front of the off side shoulder, after cracking the forward edge of the shoulder blade.  Range 80 yards.
