Replacing the Sear on a Tang Safety M77 with a Rifle Basix Sear

I ordered a Rifle Basix sear for my tang safety .308 Ruger M77. Is the installation a pretty straight forward thing to accomplish? I've not done any trigger work on any of my guns.

Val...   I am guessing you are not an old hand at tearing your rifle down or you wouldn't have asked the question.  If I am wrong I apologize for over simplifying.

I would say that replacing the sear is do-able if you pay close attention during dis-assembly so that everything goes back together smoothly.  You will need screw drivers to take the action out of the stock and some punches to drive out the pins that hold the trigger mechanism to the action. 

Actually replacing the sear is no big deal after you have the dis-assembly completed.  If you want to do this yourself and are somewhat hesitant locate some instructions for taking the Ruger 77 apart and just follow step by step.


 After I retired I picked up a variety of firearms disassembly books and videos and now do a lot of gun work myself.  Gun Digest Book Firearms Assembly/Disassembly, Part IV: Centerfire Rifles by J.B.Wood is the one I used to take my Ruger tang safety apart.  In addition to the book make a few notes or sketches of your own while disassemblying  and you shouldn't have any problems replacing the sear and getting your rifle back together.

Silvertip, Thanks for the reply. I do bed rifles but I have never played with the trigger mechanisms. If anyone has a web site that gives instructions on disassembly of rifle triggers for the Ruger tang safety, I would appreciate it if you would post the web site.

I received my Rifle Basix sear and I installed it. The worst part of the installation was finding the sear spring on the dark green carpet in my Man Cave room when I dropped it. You need to take care and have a good look at things as you remove the sear so you can install the new one. The new sear did a very good job of lightening the pull on my trigger. If you have a tang safety that needs a lighter trigger, by the sear and install it.

Val, sounds like you did good.     Always nice to do a mod that improves / personalizes one of your firearms. 

I just finished glassing and painting my tang safety Ruger today, plus some filing and polishing on the hammer and sear.  Will put it together tomorrow, at least the metal parts.  Still trying to decide if I want to refinish the wood and enjoy the plain jane walnut, or do a paint job on it.
