Lloyd,
I think I remember reading somewhere that the Zeiss conquest line was assembled stateside. I have 3 german made zeiss riflescopes that came on my drillings. One is pretty old the other 2 are newer. They have very good glass but good glass or not for me to buy them new is out of the question. The only european scopes I've ever bought new were the IOR brand from Romania, I believe there very nice scopes, a step up from the leupolds but their prices have crept up over the years.
To me at least, it's not just about the quality of the glass but the whole scope package. Leupolds are usually lighter than the german optics and more compact. Most european optics are overbuilt in my opinion. I was looking at a new, used zeiss varable and it weighed 25oz. way to heavy for me to lug around. When a leupold 6x42 is about a pound or slightly less. Perhaps not quite as good a glass but pretty good overall package for $400.00.
While Swampy thinks up his excuses and prepares his response I think I'll investigate the Meopta 6x40s a little more. Thats the only one in my price range at this time beside the Leupolds.
Regards,
