Hang on a second Tony.  You can just cap it.  4'x4' sheet of 3/4 ply wood and 2 - 8' 2x4's and several bags of quickcrete.


Dig out enough so that when the 'crete dries it's slightly below grade

That's not a bad idea.  Renting a portable cement mixer would have to be cheaper than filling it in.  Do you think I should put some re-bar in the cement?

If I dig it down a foot or so, I can plant lawn or something over it.  That spot is about where I wanted to put a raised bed garden so it may work out.

I can't take full credit, last year a friend of mine capped an old hand dug well on some property he bought.  He left the wood framing and buried it all 18" deep (below freeze line locally) so it wouldn't heave up and re-open the well.


Yes, I think I would re-enforce it with something.  On His cap we just dumped the bags and watered down in place, then worked the fencing into it, rinse the shovel when done and you won't even need to rent the mixer (unless you just want to).

I was out working on the new place today.  I one thing to say, never trust what a relative tells you.  My crazy sister and nephew were the ones that told me about the well in the front yard and I didn't get a chance to check it out until today.  It's not a well but rather a 18" deep pit with weeds and brush growing out of it. 

One of the neighbors said there used to be an ornamental wishing well there and I'm thinking the pit was dug to make it look more realistic.  Anyway filling it won't be all that much trouble.  I figure I'll build a fire in it in the next week or two to fill burn out the weeds and brush and then start filling it in with planting mix from the garden store.  This looks like a good place to put my strawberry plants.

Anyway as soon as the paper work is all done, it's going to be an orgy of activity getting the place ready to move in.

My last can of worms project was, June 21st and 22nd i'd some damaged vinyl siding from last winters blizzard, the fellas that did the siding wanted any and all cables and wires behind the siding and inletted to make for a clean looking installation + the siding has to be able to expand and contract as tempratures change, screwing wire clamps thrugh the siding prevents this from happening.
 
the TV, telephone cables came in on the NW corner the house, the last blizzard caused the coax suspension wire to break so the actual cable itsself was now yanking and tearing the corner trim of the vinyel siding at -18F and 68mph winds.
 
I had to remove the damaged trim pieces to install new, I'd thought of cheating and trimming off the pocket edges of a new piece and using the outside corner like a patch, But this is the upwind side the house and I'd not want to gamble it'd hold in cold temps during a rip snorting blizzard, so I forged ahead doing it the hard way, I removed the broken pieces.
The corner pieces were the first thing installed and the siding went on over it,
Guess what had to come off first?
 that siding that was hung in early 2000's was none to flexable in the mid 40's temps of late June Arctic coast Alaska.
I found on assembly that I didnt have a siding tool, Im not too shure it was for installing or for removing so I ended up using a cotter pin puller to use to re-tuck the locking seam on assembly, I'd learned it was tons easyer to tuck the outside loose end first and work my way inboard than to try to tuck half pulled piece from the inside out.
 
 
My last can of worms projects is finding a butt stock for a 12ga Brazilian SB shotgun, I'd actually had gotten a unfinished stock blank and did get it fitted, but the angle is wrong (no material on the blank) for the extremem drop of the stock, so looks like I'll have to go with a board of some suitable wood. (numrich is out)
 
A gift Remington semiauto .22 rifle that needs work, theres enuf of the gun left to make me think I can make it work, the cheapist parts for it cost $25 and up, this particular model requires the mag to be installed in order to fire (mags $40 and up)
it was part of a deal coming with a free .308 caliber Mauser (1893?) its dated 1916
